On the edges of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks beside the fishing River Eden, and surrounded by the dramatic and beautiful Northern Pennines, we would love to welcome you to our late 16th century Royal Oak Inn, in the heritage medieval town of Appleby. The town has the reputedly best example of an 11th century main street dominated by the preserved Norman Castle and surrounded by 13th century churches. The Royal Oak is the best location for exploring surrounding areas, as a one-night stop while completing one of the many well-known walks, or as a break on your journey from South to Scotland or vice versa.
Stopped at the Royal Oak on our Pennine Way charity walk. Everything was first class. From the moment we arrived to when we left, everything was great. The rooms are clean and well maintained. Good food, great service and exceptional hospitality.

We only stayed one night but it was a fabulous stay and we’d highly recommend Bongate House. The location is perfect - only a couple of minutes walk into Appleby town. Annie was the most obliging host; warm and welcoming and everything was organised well. She even booked us a table at a local pub for our evening meal. The room was spacious and clean with well stocked refreshments. The bed was comfy with crisp white linen. Breakfast was superb and there was a wide choice of high quality food and drinks available; nothing was too much trouble. We wish Annie all the best and hope to see her again in the future.

We stayed in room 2. Very nice room with all facilities. Friendly staff, especially Amy who served us for breakfast each morning. Nothing was too much trouble. We stayed for food in the evening and it was excellent quality. Had the Lamb Henry and posh fish finger butty on the second night. The coffee that was served with breakfast was delicious.Good choice. There was a wonderful selection of speciality teas too. Quaint old building with lots of character and excellent location right in the town centre.

YHA Dufton is great base for outdoor activity breaks exploring the wild moorland and green valleys. This accommodation in Cumbria is the perfect opportunity to stay in Europe's first Geopark, an area of great geological interest. YHA Dufton faces the pretty village green near to to the Pennine Way, and is perfectly placed to give easy access to Cross Fell and High Cup Nick. The area is good for walking holidays and cycling holidays or just a relaxing weekend break. This licensed hostel has a restaurant.
YHA was great, room lovely comfy beds, peaceful. Self catering facilities clean tidy organised. We took advantage of evening meal being prepared for us by the chef. It was great for the price and if you have just arrived as Dufton only has a pub, small cafe which has sporadic openings. Only 20 mins from Penrith to stock up with healthy supplies.

Steeped in history Appleby Castle is one of the few Norman castles to have been occupied continuously since its building. Situated at the foot of the Pennines it is one of most beautiful castles in the North of England with its dramatic architecture and stunning views. You can stay in this castle and experience living history. There are 7 bedrooms in the castle, some with ensuite and others without. There are three self catering holiday cottages in the inner bailey, each equipped with log burners, wifi and fully equipped kitchen. Appleby Golf course is less than one mile away and we are 15 miles from the Lake District. Appleby Castle is the ideal wedding venue. Several areas are licensed for civil ceremonies. Imagine celebrating your special day in the country retreat of the Queen's Champion, who fought the Spanish Armada. Experience the peace and beauty of this amazing wedding venue, the favourite home of Lady Anne Clifford.
We had such an amazing stay. I have always wanted to stay in a castle and this did not disappoint. Room was beautiful, with a solid oak four poster bed, creaky floor boards and original oak furniture. Thankfully we never encountered the ghosts here. The decor in the room was opulent with all the original features. Breakfast was plentiful and very tasty. The grounds were lovely and there was a great walk around the moat. All the staff were friendly and attentive. All in all a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend
