overall rating: 4-1/4 starsAiya was fun! The izakaya-style ground-floor space accommodates under 25 diners, so making a dinner reservation via the shop's website was a good move. The shamisen music and singing were wonderful. Although the menu was written in Japanese, knowledge of just a few words (sashimi, tempura, junmai gingo, etc.) should suffice...or maybe, like me, you will get lucky and be served by a friendly English-speaking staff member/musician. The food, drink, and vibe were great. I recommend Aiya!
We were heading to Hirosaki for the snow lantern festival and noticed this place on Facebook. He got to Hirosaki early and decided to check it out. It was a little tough to find. It is upstairs on a small street off of a main street (Hwy 4). When we stepped in, it was like be transported back to a brew pub in the US. There were 8 beers listed on a chalkboard and beneath the chalkboard were 8 taps. It was just like you would see in a Bend, OR pub. The room was large with 4 to large big tables. There was also a row of seats at a bar. The employees were happy to see us and treated us like royalty. The owner, an American from Phillie, stopped in told us the story of the place. It is interesting and worth hearing for yourself. We ordered a number of small plates and they were all good. Of special note is the exotic meat sampler. 5 types of exotic meat and vegetables on sticks. All 5 were outstanding. The pickled veggies were exceptional, as well. Now to the beer. As I stated, there were 8 beers on tap. 2 from the Be Easy brew house, 2 from Rogue Brewery, and 4 from throughout Japan. They ranged from Debbie's, which is a nice IPA, to a wonderful porter. There was also a nice wheat beer from Be Easy and a great Imperial Red from Mie. A nice touch is that the serving sizes were not real large, so it was possible to sample many of beers without being really full.In short, every time that I go to Hirosaki, I will make a point to stop into Be Easy. Here's hoping that the owner follows through and opens a second location in Misawa. My only hope is that he will add the sandwich from his FB post to the dinner as well as lunch menu.
Best Asian food near Ajigasawa-machi, Aomori Prefecture, Japan
Had drinks and dinner here last night. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful with the Japanese only menu. The dark wooden interior has lots of character, reminiscent of somewhere from Harry Potter, which the various paintings and wands on the wall back up!The fried noodles with pork, and apple pie we had were excellent, and the rest of the food we saw coming out looked pretty good too.I would definitely recommend coming here, though the location on the maps is incorrect. Pub Grandpa is next to the Smile Hotel on Dotemachi (the main road).
