We had a great vegetarian meal and I am not a vegetarian so often sceptical but was really pleasantly surprised and would highly recommend it to both vegetarians and non- vegetarians. Amazing value for money and great desserts too - especially the apple crumble. It got busy at around 20.30 so would either book or get there early!

In Amares, 13 miles from the old town of Braga, the city of bishops, on the road that leads up to the Peneda - Gerês National Park, is Churrasqueira Minhota. Good food and friendliness of the staff are part of the menu. Dinner in the summer by the pool makes the experience quite enjoyable. However, despite the quality of food, there is a recipe that certainly stands out from others. The pork ribs. The difference for competion is in the fact that the meat along the bone is reduced to a minimum and the sauce (the secret) that is use. The combination of these two factors gives to the ribs a unique flavor. Diferent from similar recipes of this kind I've ever tasted all over the country. The rice and french fries that are also part of this are made different than usual. That set a culinary delicacy that worth a try if you go to Braga, or surroundings.

Naco NA Pedra

For over 15 years that this restaurant is an icon of Braga (the third-largest city in Portugal).
The food is without fail, amazing whether you go for the "Tibornada de Bacalhau (Cod fish)" or for the great success of the Chef Vitor "Posta à Mirandesa".. I can also highly recommend "Espeto de Picanha" (Tender loin on the spit). Among several Deserts I would like to mention the favourites "Crepe à Naco" and "Baba de Camelo ". In addition to a warm atmosphere, some times with live music, the staff is very efficient and courteous. Concerning the wines, they have a wide list to pamper any appreciator. The prices are very reasonable and most of the courses are enough for two. When in Braga look for the NACO NA PEDRA at Rua Fernado Oliveira Guimarães 38 and do not forget to book for dinner. Located in Santa Maria do Bouro and a few steps away from the Pousada, this family run restaurant with traditional granite walls and local decor serves really nice and tasty local food. The menu is interesting and you’ll find delicious fish and meat dishes. However after many years of coming back to this place I usually end up going every time for the typical codfish dish and the Papas de Sarrabulho and Rojões or Arroz de Sarrabulho. These are some of the typical dishes and wonderfully cooked here and the Deserts are fantastic. As for the wine menu it’s reasonable. Overall the food is really tasty and be aware portions are huge! The owners and staff are really friendly and helpful and this restaurant is good for all occasions such as business, with friends, families (might be noisy if any party is going on), etc and it also features wifi. Definitely worth to come back.

7 of us called in for the set lunch which was just 6 euros per person, included starter soup & a choice of fish, portuguese sausage or veal wrapped in bacon, it was so filling and tasty, so cheap and included bread basket. Service was amazing and spoke good english as we were poor at portuguese, recommended.

Bouros Santa Marta is no more than a row of houses along the road on one of the routes to Peneda-Geres National Park. We were staying at the Pousada in the next village where the food was expensive and not to our taste to say the least. Investigating a better deal we made our way West from the Pousada coming across this small unassuming restaurant about 2 or 3 kilometres along the road. It's probably about 5k East of Amares. They have a car park above the main road which was convenient. Making our way up the steps to what really appeared to be no more than a cheap bar we had misgivings but the locals drinking around the doorway beckoned is in to be greeted by the patron. He showed us through to a fairly large but simple dining room which was illuminated by the ubiquitous TV screen but the only table occupied was by the kitchen staff. This was about 7.30pm and our first reaction was that perhaps they had a good lunchtime business and we were too late for a proper meal. We were completely wrong. The kitchen staff were shooed back to their stoves and after a lengthy search a menu in English was presented. There was a large selection of mainly grilled dishes which were virtually all listed as suitable for two persons. We ordered veal brochettes between the two of us and a bottle of red wine. The cheapest wines started at 4euros per bottle, not including the even cheaper wines available by the carafe,so we pushed the boat out and ordered the second most expensive bottle of red available for 6 euros. And very drinkable it was too!
The restaurant was by now busying up with locals calling in to eat so I think we were now becoming aware that the place had a good reputation, when our meal arrived we could see why. A very large serving plate arrived with fried potatoes, rice, some salad, and two large kebabs of veal ,peppers and onions on top. We could barely eat all the meat because of the generous portion size and had to leave some of the fries and rice. All this came to a total bill just over 22 euros including the usual bread and olives, the wine, and a large bottle of water.
This was great wholesome food if you are hungry-as we were, fantastic value, and despite impenetrable language barriers we were made to feel really welcome. Every village across the world needs a bar/restaurant like this.
