The smoke in the hallway carpet was still overpowering despite requesting a non-smoking rooming in this port side hotel. Fortunately there was a drugstore next door to buy masks and fabric & air cleaner. Additionally, there aren’t other businesses near the hotel. Best to find a hotel closer in town.

Typical Japanese hotel. Rooms and bed were small but standard for Japanese sizes. The location is great, right in the city centre and a whole load of eateries and restaurants around. Parking is however, a huge mess. I am not sure if this is the same for all hotels in Amami but the hotel has so many different parking spaces it was too confusing. For our 2 nights in this hotel, we had to park at 3 different spaces. First one was a 3 minute walk away and it was a valet system. We had to inform them what time we would be driving again so they know how to arrange the cars and that was realy troublesome considering we didnt have a concrete plan as yet. Second parking space was right behind the hotel but also valet and also needed to inform them of time. Final parking space was at some random parking lot 3 minutes away from hotel and this one required no valet or notification. Location is perfect but not when you have a car.. Other than that, service was standard and up to expectations.

I opted for an ocean view, and there was a great view with a small balcony and two comfortable beds. It was spacious and looked like it had recently been completely renovated. It did have an odor problem which required the considerable airing out the room once we got there, but it was almost unnoticeable thereafter. The resort has been around for awhile which I actually like, but if you're looking for something constructed in the last few years, that is not this resort. Having said that, renovations are actively going on and the restaurant was really pleasant with delicious food.

Good thing our guide was able to program the GPS to find the place, as it is not easy to find. Yagishima means "Goat Island," and the goat theme is played for all it is worth. The hotel has everything you need, so long as you have someone who speaks Japanese (apparently with a strange accent). English is virtually non-existent on the island. A biodiversity paradise, the island is sparsely inhabited, with 47000 residents. Much of the island is rural in the lowlands, with magnificent forests in the hills. We had wonderful guides for the area who took us into the forest where we saw, and photographed, an amazing assortment of animals, from crabs and insects to birds and even the very rare Amami Long-haired Rat. The latter is the size of a small house cat with a very long bare tail. It looks more like an opossum than a rat. I've included a photo of this amazing creature as well as one of a "gejigeji," which looks like a creature from a horror movie, but is actually kept as a pet by some people. It is a favorite food of the Ryukyu Scops-owl, which is fairly common on the island. The hotel has free laundry facilities (you have to buy detergent) and WiFi. The latter was spotty, poor at first, excellent as I write this review.

A 24 hour front desk and baggage storage are some of the conveniences offered at this hotel. A pool and an on-site restaurant will also help to make your stay even more special. The staff at Coral Palms looks forward to serving you during your upcoming visit.
All of the staff at the hotel are super friendly! There is a Marine activity shop and rental car, restaurant, swimming pool and Ocean view and beach walk all right at the hotel! 10 min. drive from the airport comes with free shuttle. Hotel is a bit old, but clean. Great visit! Would love to go back :)
