Pretty decent traditional food served in a no frills joint at reasonable prices. Service was friendly and efficient.I would have given it a better rating for decent food and good value for money... but! When I was asked how everything was I told the waitress that the cod dish contained no cod. Her response was that if I wanted to complain, then I should have done so before eating. 1. I wasn't complaining, just answering her question. If she didn't want to hear the truth, then she should not ask.2. The person who had the cod dish was a child. Not exactly someone who would be able to tell, nevertheless complain.Being cheated by staff who is rude when you tell them is enough to make me overlook anything good the restaurant might have.

We found this restaurant to be charming. The service staff was pleasant and attentive. I ordered the sardine pate that came in the little packaging that I also saw at the gas station. I was disappointed but it did not cost enough to worry about. My wife and I shared the monk fish and shrimp in a big pot of perfectly cooked rice that really was very good. They had a nice selection of local wine that was reasonably priced.Overall a very good experience !

This is one of those lucky finds you come across and you think WOW!!The owner Luis Pedras is a very talented friendly man who not only has an amazing Chinese wife who cooks but he himself is a local potter and writer. Fascinating man who really knows how to be the perfect host, we left feeling not only well fed and water reed but also like family.Sitting outside opposite the castle and his pottery studio we munched delicious fresh bread and cheese with local olives and his wifeâs unique sauce, (which is a Portuguese dressing with an oriental twist) in the sun with some of his home made, rather potent but delicious sangria. The whole meal was a Portuguese, oriental twist with tender marinated pork sitting on a bed of fluffy jasmine rice. Then dessert was a very local, (as in only made in Elvas) dish which had a slight Indian quality with its cinnamon infused flavours.Washed down by an excellent expresso & a glass of local honey wine finished it off. Excellent food and excellent company- thank you Luis we will hopefully be back some day if you donât visit us first!!

A landmark of the country's gastronomy in the Alentejo, with the quality of where and when innovation is never forgotten. The taste stands out in a privileged perch for lovers of Alentejo cuisine presented here with refinement and served with care.
It is worthwhile to drive to the small village of Terrugem to eat in this little jewell: Bolota da Castanha. The excellence of food is outstanding: food is tasty, crisp and freshly made. The service ias good as you can get. True, it is not exactly cheap but you must go there! Here, you rediscover the pleasure of eating!

Elvas has several restaurants, but the surrounding towns and villages have far fewer choices. We stopped here for lunch and were more than pleasantly surprised. It is a very busy place, a favorite of locals and area business people, and for good reason. The food is very fresh, the menu is extensive, the service is friendly, the prices low ⦠so far so good. We were considering our choices when a server walked by with a delivery from a local fisherman. He showed several fish, and I chose a specimen that he immediately cleaned and put on the grill. The result was a crispy outside and firm, moist flesh. My partner had a lovely lamb dish. The prices are moderate, the parking directly in front, and the experience remarkable. We recommend Pompilio very highly.

Mercato is a modern & vintage tavern, where you find a several variety of Alentejo wines and European beers, craft beers, typical snacks. In addiction a delicious cheese boards, portuguese sausages, burguers on a typical bread from Madeira Island!
That's an honest and comfortable restaurant, with good food and service. The clams with coriander, although the clams were not the best, they were fresh and very well cooked, with an excellent taste. The "bacalhau dourado" very good. The price very adjusted.

Having read the reviews for this place we were really looking forward to our lunch. The first problem was that despite mention on their FB page of a menu del dia at â¬12.95 we were told on arrival that this was only available to corporate clients. Why? We were provided immediately with bread and âdipsâ but having read a previous review about the cost of these being added to the bill despite not having been ordered we sent them back and ordered olives. Unfortunately they had no olives!!I perused the wine list but couldnât find glasses of wine listed. (We were driving so didnât want a bottle) I therefore asked whether we could have a glass of wine each and was told that we could. Why wasnât this option on the menu? In the absence of a menu del dia we decided to just have a main course. My wife chose a pork steak with an egg and was pleased with it. I chose green cod with shrimps but was told that they didnât have this. Therefore on the waiterâs recommendation I chose the golden cod. It was bland! Very little cod and lots of chopped cabbage and leek. When asked whether I liked it I stated that I thought it boring and that it needed âspicing upâ. I was asked whether this was âconstructive criticismâ. I said it was. As I sent half the dish back and had expressed dissatisfaction with it I thought I might receive a discount when the bill arrived. But no such luck. So we left disappointed and resolved that the next time we are in Elvas (a wonderful place) we will eat elsewhere.

At last, at the third attempt, a good restaurant found in Elvas, not easy to find but worth it. The interior was a pleasant surprise, lots of character. It was quite large, and popular so no quiet intimate corners but plenty of atmosphere. We had lunch on a Wednesday in March and the place was full by 1400hrs. The menu is extensive, not as many regional dishes as you may expect but a good choice of slightly more sophisticated dishes. There was steak and fish actually served with a sauce and some dishes came with vegetables. I did not want the inevitable chips with my steak but I did not get offered an alternative, such as a side salad. The desserts were all illustrated so choosing was easy. Prices were very reasonable and portions are on the large size, and I did get a doggy bag when I asked for it. The only reason I have not given five stars is the lack of interchange with the waiter and no enquiry about whether we had everything we needed and whether we enjoyed the food - which we did! Will definitely visit again when next in the town.
