Alaska, United States Food Guide: 10 American food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Anchorage

May 24, 2020 Emerita Lamoureux

Reviews on American food in Anchorage, Alaska, United States. Set amid the coastal Chugach Mountains, Anchorage defies popular visions of polar ice caps and frozen tundra. It’s also warmer than you think (averaging 65 degrees in summer), making conditions ideal for sight-seeing or taking on uniquely Alaskan opportunities like arctic biking or touring the fjords of Prince William Sound. In the winter, you can ski, dogsled or do both simultaneously by "skijoring," which is cross-country skiing while being towed by a dog. Hey, it's no crazier a winter sport than the biathlon.

We saved the best for last but wished we dined here sooner and gone back again. Once you’ve experienced truly great good food and fabulous service you realize quickly how others fall short.

I narrowed my choices for seafood down based on these varied TripAdvisor reviews, and chose this place, and was not disappointed. Came down to the Jambalaya and the Scallops over jasmine rice and almost wish I had had the jambalaya instead now. The scallops were tasty but very small, and the jasmine rice would have been better had it been anything else rather than a scoop of warm sticky white rice like you'd find in a cheap asian restaurant. The dish had nice greens and a good presentation, and the wines offered and the service at the bar made for a very nice meal. I'd go back in a minute to sample more of the menu

We simply wanted a quick bite to eat near our hotel and this one fit the bill. Didn't know quite what to expect but, although crowded, we were seated within a minute or two. And then came the meal, a simple hamburger and french fries, but when we bit into our hamburgers we were transfixed! Someone once said that the sign of a great chef is when they can make simple food taste fantastic! This chef can do it. Kudos to him or her. Possibly the best hamburger I've ever had in my life!

Wonderful setting, polished service, fine cuisine and extensive wine list (some 435 selections, inventory of 6,200, strong in California wines; we had a fine Paul Hobbs 2016 Russian River Valley Chardonnay, $85). The original house was built in 1916 by the Alaska Railroad for management personnel. The founders had an active catering business doing festivals events when they decided to create a permanent home in 1979. They turned it into an intimate restaurant with just 46 seats, with 14 tables in two rooms, with almost a New England feel, naming it for the klutzy Marx Brothers comedy team they resembled when moving into the new space, according to their website. We had a table by window at the back of the house and watched the Chef and staff running back and forth from prep room at the back of the build (and also wine storage, given the small size of the house). We enjoyed the pan-seared Kodiak scallops ($45), in a roasted vegetable and tomato sauce, with fried polenta and sautéed morel mushrooms, a combination that worked well with the different flavors and textures. Our other entrée was fresh salmon with couscous, another winner. They touted their Caesar salad ($14.50 per person), made table side with fresh garlic, anchovies and raw egg, but it lacked parmesan cheese and the dressing was bland. We almost opted for two interesting appetizers (sautéed halibut cheeks, $18; and the Neapolitan seafood mousse, $17.50, layers of Maine lobster, smoked salmon and smoked halibut served with toast points, red onion gremolata and American caviar), based on recommendations by our server. And will should we have the opportunity to visit again.

No one can claim fine dining is limited to the major metro areas of the world. This modest restaurant nestled in the woods of Girdwood near the Alyeska Resort features fresh healthy foods carefully prepared—most of the time. The only thing to detract from this fine restaurant was the careless way my order of Broccolini was prepared. Not only was it a pale green, indicating overcooking or age, but also I could not cut it with a regular knife and a steak knife an attendant brought me. He actually thought this vegetable required a steak knife. How was I to chew it if it were required? Otherwise, our experienced waiter guided us through the menu and we enjoyed a terrific meal on the restaurant’s enclosed front porch. The sweet potato fries were unique and tender. The other high points were the bouillabaisse,.the curried vegetable entree, and the wine suggestion. We even almost consumed the entire huge slice of the chocolate dessert. We will fix the broccolini preparation.Thank you!

I met a friend for lunch at Snow City cafe. I have heard so many positive comments about the cafe and have wanted to try it for years. Only the parking situation downtown has prevented me. The experience today did not disappoint. The service was friendly and prompt, the Tator tot quiche was delightful along with the fruit salad. The window booth made for good visiting in a busy cafe. Prices are mid-range with retro diner ambiance. Parking still an issue and we found a place in a public lot for $5/hr.
