Had a memorable meal at this lovely Kaiseki restaurant. The food was great and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The private room had a wonderful atmosphere with a beautiful garden view. After the meal we were given a lift back to our hotel via the illuminated cherry blossom. Price was extremely reasonable. Excellent local Saké. All in all perfect !

This restaurant is renowned for Kiritanpo (a traditional food of Akita Prefecture, a chewy rice cake) in soup. People of the restaurant say that their Kiritanpo-dish is “the 2nd best” in the city, but perhaps the best – they do amazing Kiritanpo and fantastic Japanese Sakes! You can get many Akita local foods also, such as Samurai-set meal (buke-meshi), Japanese noodle (inaniwa-udon), and local chicken (Hinai-jidori) in various styles. Kiritanpo is served to 2 persons minimum in this restaurant, other than a lone visitor. Staffs are friendly and helpful. They have Tatami-floors and tables. The inside is basic, and very clean. Since many guidebooks recommend this restaurant, it good to turn up earlier or book in advance in high seasons.

This is a must -try place to eat if you are at this area. There is a long queue but worth the wait. The lunch set is worth it and portion is just right. It is valuable for money and it is a good place to try soba if you have not done so while in Akita.

What a surprise to find such a great restaurant in sleepy Lake Tazawa! While the menu isn't entirely organic, it seems they try to incorporate local products and lots of fresh vegetables into the dishes. I'm a vegetarian and had no problems finding things on the menu. We really enjoyed our meal.

Restaurant Sakura no sato

We went to the Kakunodate town to see the beautiful cherry blossoms in late April, and learned in advance that this restaurant offers excellent Oyakodon (chicken and egg rice bowl) and Inaniya udon (Japanese noodles). Upon arriving at the Kakunodate train station, we took a taxi to the restaurant immediately, despite it was a bit early for lunch, because customers queuing outside accumulated fast before noon. We only had the Oyakodon, which is actually a very common Japanese dish, and is served almost in every Japanese restaurants, including those in Taiwan, but theirs was the best I ever had. It is because they use only the Hinnai chicken and eggs, which is the Akita Prefecture's specialty. The price is moderate, and the restaurant building is traditional Japanese style. Due to its popularity, table sharing is common, but in the cherry blossom season when the outside is cold, the crowdedness inside isn't so unbearable. After the meal, walking in the main street to see all the cherry blossoms and traditional samurai houses is an enjoyable exercise. The scenery extends to the nearby river bank, along with many stores selling local produce, delicate sweets, and fine handicrafts. No wonder this one of the three best cherry blossom watching places in the whole Tohoku.
