First up I'll be honest that the rooms are smal(ish), but certainly the room we had was on a par with city centre budget hotels and plenty big enough for a couple of nights. With that said, there's nothing else to fault about the hotel for what it offers at the price. Staff are friendly and helpful, there's a rooftop onsen which is large enough for the size of the hotel (even offering an outdoor pool) and free ramen supper if you fancy a late snack. The rooms are spotless and the location is very convenient for the rail and bus stations, the port and the main shops/restaurants with the bonus of a small supermarket just across the road. If we end up back in Abishiri we'll use this hotel again.

Convenient location across the street from the Abashiri train station, directly on the airport bus line. The bus linking the ice breaker port and Abashiri Prison Museum stops there as well. Rooms are outdated but clean. Bathroom is tiny and reminded me of a ship. Breakfast was basic but tasty, although nothing on the hotplates was actually hot. Expensive for what you get (we paid ¥15000/night) but Abashiri hotels are all expensive.

Our third stay at Abashiri Kanko since 2014 June. Room and service is OK, no surprise. Hotel, especially the rooms should be in a better shape if renovated. WiFi service is OK at times in the lobby but still no WiFi in rooms. Onsen is excellent. Breakfast is still quite good and decent even though, comparing to 2014, a bit not as before. Still our choice if we come to Abashiri again.

Not so far from JR Abashiri station, just turn right and walk straight to the next traffic light, hotel is on left side. If you select a Japanese style room, you have to use public toilet and bathroom. I do suggest Western style room for more convenient. The staffs are generous with smiling all the time. Wi-Fi is strong.I suggest booking with breakfast and dinner because there are few restaurant nearby, especially in winter, finding right place for dinner is quite hard.Anyway there are KFC,PIZZA HUT about 200 meters on the right side.

My wife and I stayed here recently for 2 nights in Japanese style western room. One word sums up the stay - luxury. The level of service from all staff we came in touch with was top class, ie. front desk, restaurant staff, shuttle drivers, housekeeping. The quality of food at the buffet for both dinner and breakfast was excellent and stations quickly replenished (of course very much Asian themed). Our room was large, spacious, very comfortable and quiet. Though the hotel is actually in Yobito, which is approx 8km outside Abashiri itself, the hotel shuttle bus provides connections to all the main atttractions eg drift ice cruise, museums. Also little touches such as the open fireplace in the bar for toasting your own marshmallows add an intimate cosy feel to the hotel. Would we stay here again if visiting Abashiri area? Most certainly!

I’ve read reviews that this ryokan is famous for its food, and boy did it not disappoint! It was the first of the three ryokans we stayed this trip, and we knew we were in the off season and wouldn’t have much to see in terms of scenery. We opted for the meal upgrade, and had a fantastic spread, which included the standard kaiseki meal with the addition of the seasonal kinki fish done two ways! The Onsen is basic, which is essentially a warm water pool. The rooms also had the basic facilities. The toilets are small, which is expected in the traditional ryokan hotel as all showering is usually done at the Onsen itself. The ragwort flourishes in front of the hotel in Autumn, as pictures would prove it. In our little morning walk to the lake front, we saw two white tailed eagles, and there were whooper swans in the lake, which was certainly a plus given we were expecting not to see any thing at all.

We stayed in standard twin room. On trip also stayed in 1 Route Inn, 1 JR Inn, and 1 MyStays for comparison. Tiniest room we had in Japan. No place for 1 bag, much less 2 carry ons and did not fit under beds as suggested. Impractical desk area wedged alongside bed. Several lamps. Tiny but functional bathroom. Firm mattress. Buckwheat pillow. Corridor was freezing in 15F degree temperatures. I put the plastic in room adverts along the base of the room door to block the draft into the room. Quiet unless room by elevator (looked like 2 adjacent and 2 across hall from elevator). Minimal lobby with basic breakfast of breads + a few Japanese dishes; no restaurant but a smelly curry being prepared for a sort of happy hour. We did not partake. 10 minute walk to convenience store for supplies/dinner. Across from train station, so convenient. Check out 10 am.

This is a weird one. A monument of Japan's 80s asset price bubble, this hotel has several wings containing more rooms that it can ever dream of filling up. On the one hand, you can see where the cost cutting has occurred to keep the behemoth going: there's no air-conditioning in the corridors; the well-worn carpets and furniture look like they have never been replaced since the hotel opened; half the machines in the game room aren't working; bellmen whisk your luggage away on ramshackle trolleys originally meant for ferrying goods. On the other, despite the sad state of the hotel, you can see the staff proudly at work, providing an impeccable level of service. As alluded to in my title, if you come with an open mind this can be a rather enjoyable hotel. The rooms are massive (but in the summer, they can be very hot as the air conditioning struggles to cool the temp down). There's a performance ("so bad it's good") by a local musician in the lobby in the evenings. For furniture lovers, there are some very good examples of mid-century modern pieces scattered around. The hotel has quite an illustrious history if you bother to read up on it on the Japanese-language version of its website. In its heyday, this must have been the grandest establishment in Hokkaido outside of Sapporo. One last thing: I couldn't find any information on whether the hotel has self service laundry, so to pay it forward -- yes there is a little room at the end of the corridor with a separate washer and dryer.

Top quality food here in a very lovely building, surrounded by beautiful landscape. Beautiful place to get away from it all for a few days. Staff are excellent and service is of a high standard. Slightly awkward to get to from the railway station. It’s a short taxi ride or a 40 minute walk with a very steep uphill ending in a rather remote environment.

Western/Japanese room was about the same size as a standard European hotel room and was quite comfortable. The hotel itself is quite dated in its appearance and decor and could benefit from a makeover. Although the room was billed as a smoking room, it was pleasantly smoke-free. But once outside the door, the stench of cigarettes from other rooms in the corridor was appalling. Japan needs to go the whole way and ban smoking in all public buildings. Breakfast was very good for either the western or Japanese offering and both were hearty enough to last all day. Most of the front desk staff could speak English and the hotel is a few minutes away from the bus station where you can connect with the airport coach. Ten minutes walk away is the railway station. There is a 7-11 shop next door for snacks and the local shopping street is one block away. It does not have much to offer however and appears to be suffering from urban blight. Take warm clothes and waterproof boots in winter. A short walk away is the Abashiri civic art gallery which is not very impressive.
