May 16, 2022 Madelene Haan

In Seattle you simply can’t skip the Central Public Library – a modern architectural marvel of glass grids, unusual shapes, and a “book spiral” that climbs four stories. Stroll over to Pike Place Market to visit the original Starbucks and play catch with a fishmonger. In the heart of the city lies Chihuly Garden and Glass, which will dazzle you with its colorful and delicate works. Glide to the top of the Space Needle for panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and Puget Sound.

Seattle Public Library

This was almost a pilgrimage for us - world class architecture + books! Designed by Rem Koolhaas, this wonderful piece of modern architecture stands out among its neighbors. We rode up the elevator to the top floor for the views of the city. We walked down the ramps soaking in the various reading/reference/research areas. The second floor is dedicated to conference/seminar functions marked by bold red color. The kids section is on the left hand side of the lower entrance. They also have a cafe & shop. It felt great to have experienced world class architecture. Just one cautionary advice: the library seems to be overrun by homeless people, especially when it comes to the restrooms. We were warned (by the locals) against using restrooms at the library. So as long as you take appropriate care, you should be fine. We safely wandered in all nooks & corners thoroughly exploring the library with the exception of restrooms.

Seattle Metaphysical Library

All things metaphysical - a subscription-based library open to the public for browsing. Our collection of books and other media supports the effort to understand individual, personal development, and social evolvement. The range of subjects is too extensive to list here; it includes the interests of the various librarians over the library's forty-year history. Best to visit our website for the booklist, and hours of operation. We also have small discussion groups and author readings.

I absolutely adore coming to this library. Both the exterior and the upstairs reading room are architectural doppelgängers for Hogwarts (the castle in Harry Potter), and it's a stunning yet welcoming place to peruse books, study, or simply sit and soak in the knowledge. The reading room in particular has stained glass windows and high, arching ceilings, and feels more like a European castle than a US library. It's a functional library as well and they have a wide variety of books that you might need. There's a small café on the main floor as well.

Right inside Pike Place Market. I remember when I was a kid that used to have soap box derby races down this hill. They probably stopped at cuz of all the people that crashed. It was great fun. Now, it's a bunch of shops that are all pretty cool and definitely worth a visit when you're at the Pike Place Market. In my opinion the Pike Place Market is the single one thing you must do in Seattle if you were there come especially on a sunny day
