Cairo’s an ancient city that also happens to be a modern metropolis—it’s one of the biggest cities in the Middle East and has the traffic and noise issues to prove it. But as long as you’re not looking for solitude, Cairo—the City of the Thousand Minarets—is a splendid place to explore Egyptian history and culture. Makan ECCA is a unique music venue that aims to present traditional music and musicians in Egypt as renewable cultural resources that bridge Mediterranean and sub-Saharan African cultures. ECCA further encourages efforts to re-awaken the multi-layered complexity of Egyptian culture of music and arts, to return the music to the critical role it has played in the daily life of the Egyptian people.
I attend performances at Makan regularly but Taksir Sharqi has to my favorite act there. The mix of traditional Egyptian instruments and Western ones works well and the performers have a great chemistry and energy. I definitely recommend this whether you live in Cairo or are visiting, The place is small so arrive early to get seats. Only down side is that seats are not very comfortable.

We love to go to Wekalet El Ghouri especially to watch the Tannoura show that it's really one of a kind show! The place is very well maintained and displays the beauty of Egyptian architecture. The tannoura performance is an hour show: instruments solos and spiritual band singing and the other half of the show is the whirling dervishes dance! the show runs every Saturday/Monday/Wednesday at 7 PM and we have to be there minimum one hour ahead to buy the tickets (the sold out quickly). Highly recommended!
