I stayed here with my mother and girlfriend for two nights, and we were all surprised by the bubbly and kind staff members. Everyone has their own strong personality, yet they are the same in the way they express hospitality and care for their guests. Yukawaya is a family-run business, and it’s history dates back many generations. Many generations that they have been learning the craft and passing it on to the next members of the family: such is the authenticity of traditional Japan. I especially enjoyed speaking with the grandmother, who despite her old age and tiny frame is always full of energy, making jokes, and wearing a smile. Meals here are delicious and express the local foods of Yoshino while delivering courses that never fail to surprise, sate, and fill your belly. Even the inside of the ryokan feels unique, with small circular hallways, beautiful decorations, and an attention to detail that can’t be missed. If there was one thing I wish was better, it would be that the bath is confined indoors and is not of an impressive size. Yet, it is a small sacrifice to make while staying at such a pleasant ryokan in the middle of such a beautiful town.

We loved the food, dinner and breakfast was delicious and vast. The public bath was OK, and the rooms were big and comfortable. The staff was very nice, although nobody could speak English. It didn't matter, as we managed. Compared to other public baths, this was not as great.

We visited during the Autumn when the trees were changing colours - this is a quiet time for Yoshino but well worthwhile - the mix of leaf colours and ancient temples was fantastic. It was so quiet we were the only visitors when we visited some of the oldest and most attractive temples. Hounkan Ryokan is located on Yoshino mountain, about 20 minutes walk (uphill) from the Yoshino Ropeway. The ryokan is easy to find and has a small car park (opposite and a few meters down the hill). The inn itself is relatively modern but is traditionally run with limited flexibility around eating times. The staff speak limited English but are very courteous and helpful. The reception also provides a written English language guide to the key facilities and activities available at the ryokan. We booked a room with an outside tub (highly recommended) and half board (breakfast and dinner). Our room was large with a small indoor terrace with views over Mount Yoshino. The view was fantastic especially from the (small) outdoor bath tub and separate bathroom. The room décor and furnishings were simple and traditional with a low table and cushions (with a backrest) during the day, replaced with large futons at night. The small terrace area also had two western style chairs, small table and fridge). It was a great place to relax at the end of the day. There are very pleasant onsen hot baths (two bathing areas alternating between males and females each day). The hotel provides everything you need for the baths, including robes and towels. The baths have all the shampoos and soaps you need. The food was excellent, half board is recommended as there are very few restaurants in the area at night, and you can also order wine, beer and sake with your meal. The meals are fixed menu with no choices, but you really don’t need choice as there are lots of dishes and some form of “cook your own” course (e.g. chicken on a grill or sukiyaki). The traditional breakfast was large and varied (but always included some form of grilled fish). The dining room setup was western style with tables and chairs. The highlight of this Ryokan is the opportunity to have a private bath tub overlooking the Yoshino mountainside. The round wooden bath is effectively outside as it sits on an open terrace with no windows obscuring you view, getting you as closed to nature as possible. Highly recommended.

I booked late for the cherry blossom season and thought I was lucky even to get this. The room itself was nice and large. I was by myself but it was large enough for 4. It was on the first floor. We had a shared toilet on the first floor as well as toilets we could use on the ground and basement floors. The shower/bathroom was one of those communal types where potentially many people could shower at once. As mentioned previously, bath times were from 5 to 10 pm. There was no food available so you had to eat on the mountain (where the restaurants closed by 6pm) or the hotel could order Chinese takeaway for you. They also sold some snacks. The toilet and bath situation actually weren't so bad once you got used to it but I didn't like the fact that the walls were so thin you could hear your neighbours' conversations. The hotel was a very short walk from the train station and a 15 minute walk up the hill to the town. It is a very beautiful walk. The view from my room was lovely and the lady managing the place was very pleasant. Overall I wouldn't give this a glowing assessment but given that there is so little accommodation available and Yoshino is so beautiful during the cherry blossom season, you should still book it if there's nothing else available.

I stayed here one night with my mother and she is not very mobile so we found out that mount Yoshino was a bit of a challenge for her. However the staff of the hotel picked us up, drove us to a place for lunch and the morning after they drove us all the way down to the trainstation. Great service!! The meals here were good, the rooms are basic but well you stay on a mountain. The hotel lies a little away from the town but you can walk easily around.

Enjoyed my stay. I was given a room with a beautiful view of the cherry blossoms (sakura) from my window, which were in their peak. It is a typical Ryokan inn with tatami mats, futon to sleep on and cushions to sit on. It was a shared bathroom and had a nice ofuro bath.

We booked this hotel 6 months in advance through aJapanese Travel agency to make sure that we get to see the Sakura at Yoshino. We had no idea where the hotel was situated due to language barrier.Had to climb up the hill with our luggages and ask locals where the hotel was. After a long climb through the pretty town we finally found Sakoya. When we checked in we were led to a room downstairs almost like a cellar where the air was damp and freezing with toilet and basin outside in the hall! I was livid since I had already paid and requested the toilet inside our room! I told the proprietor that it was unacceptable but was told that the hotel was fully booked during Sakura time and since we were not having dinner they had put us downstairs (in the cellar?)I told the proprietor that I would report this to Japan Travel Bureau and Trip advisor about this. After an hour or so we were led to an entirely different room which was much more pleasant from the last one.The proprietor later apologized and gave us a little gift before we left but it did not erase the bad memories we had of the place!
