This 17 bedroom property was purchased and totally refurbished by J D Wetherspoon in January 2012.All reviews pre January 2012 do not relate to our operation of the business.
Staff lovely evening meal great and room large and spacious unfortunately the sofa was not anything I would want to sit on due to the stains. Room at front of building and unfortunately the 30 or so individuals that insisted on shouting screaming etc in the square til 4 am made for a sleepless night. Had breakfast that unfortunately had been under heat too long and bacon completely dried out. So a mixed review. Certainly room for improvement

A magical Welsh hotel with medieval roots dating back to the days of Edward I. Set within acres of woods and parkland a little over 20 miles from Chester, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Ruthin Castle is a truly romantic hotel steeped in history. The castle dates back to the legend of King Arthur with notable owners including King Edward I, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Book a stay in one of the many rooms; dine on cuisine created using only the freshest local produce; bring a team of merry men for a themed night of fun, food and laughter; enjoy great business facilities in a secluded venue or book the wedding of your dreams within the ancient walls and picturesque grounds. Ruthin Castle is a royal Welsh gem just waiting to be explored.
We took relatives here for afternoon tea. We expected a selection of sandwiches, but only got ham and cheese, and not much of that in them. Our pescatarian friend had just 4 small tuna sandwiches. Although the scones were tasty they came with canned cream that was sweet and tasted very synthetic. We were left as only one of two occupied tables in a very large room, once the food was delivered the waiting staff vanished. We had to go to the kitchen to find someone to bring us more tea, and then more milk to go with it. The grounds are sadly neglected, which is a shame as they had obviously once been impressive. Their food hygiene rating is 0, a fact we only noticed on the way out. Would not recommend it.

Set on the outskirts of historic Ruthin, Lyons Woodlands Hall offers a quaint and quiet break in the countryside. Seven hotel rooms, a variety of static holiday home accommodation, a restaurant and excellent facilities mean that we have something to offer for everybody - whether you're looking for a secluded hot tub retreat or a quaint country hotel escape. Ideal for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers - and those who yearn for relaxation in our gym sauna, and tennis courts.
This is a strange place! The building is old and characterful with great views. My bedroom was the large deluxe double at the front and, although being a bit tired decor wise, was fairly comfortable. When I arrived there was a quiz on, followed by karaoke. I can’t blame the hotel for the singing quality, but it was pretty excruciating trying to eat dinner to that background! The let down for my stay was some of the staff, and the food. When I went to bed I noticed that a fire door near my room was beeping - close enough that I could hear it in bed so it would disturb me. When I went downstairs to tell the staff I was told to either have another drink or stuff a napkin in my ears! There was no offer to help in any meaningful way. Sure enough I was kept awake until about 3.30am by the beeping noise. I’ll admit to not being in the best mood when I came down for breakfast, but instead of breakfast reviving me it just made things worse. The young lady serving seemed to have no idea what she was doing, but also no sense of customer service. The cooked breakfast was a mixture of cold beans and molten sausages so clearly hadn’t been cooked to order. The only coffee available was instant granules next to a thermos of hot water. I wouldn’t describe myself as a coffee snob but when you’ve paid £130 for a night I would at least expect some proper coffee. Maybe it was an off night with new staff, I don’t know. But I cannot recommend this place.

We stayed in the cottage attached to the main house. The cottage was excellent. Everything you need. We had long days out & about the area it was lovely to come back & relax with snacks we had bought. I would recommend to anyone wanting to visit this area.

We had a lovely time here expertly hosted by Gavin and Christopher. We came for the food, which was amazing, breakfast and dinner. We had a room on the top floor with lovely views of the hills. Really nice room with real ground coffee and a cafetiere. Parking isn't far away and a parking permit was provided.

Breathtaking views from this traditional beef and sheep working farm near Ruthin, North Wales are worth seeing to believe! Huw and Ella provide a warm welcome to their bed and breakfast accommodation which they have tastefully renovated for the pleasure and comfort of their guests. Your hosts Huw and Ella are keen musicians, and if you are also a music lover a visit to a rehearsal with a renowned choir of Wales is recommended (held locally most Thursday evenings).
I stayed here for two nights in late May. The hosts Ella and Huw were so kind and generous. The breakfasts were great and he accommodation so lovely in the time period of the house, Their yarded garden is beautiful and the views of the Vale of Clwyd are stunning, I loved the area, so close to Ruthin, a great market town. In addition Huw found out exactly where my grandpa ( Taid)had grown up at Llanelidan,

We were attending a wedding in nearby Ruthin and fortunately found this brilliant B&B which we would rate as 5star plus. We were met by John & Michelle and shown to a one bedroom private annex with quality fittings and furnishings which was just perfect. A surprise was the stocked fridge with cheeses ham bread fruit juice etc and catered for Gluten Free. John also drove us and collected us from a wedding we attended. All in all a first class stay for 2 nights and one that we will highly recommend.
