Set in Te Anau, 2.5 km from Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre, Bob & Maxines Backpackers offers accommodation with free bikes, free private parking, a shared lounge and a garden. The property is located 1.6 km from Fiordland Cinema, 2.4 km from Te Anau Glow Worm Caves and 3 km from Ivon Wilson Park. The accommodation provides a shared kitchen and free WiFi throughout the property. We are 1.9Km from the bus stop in Miro St. If it is raining just call and we are happy to pick you up. Once you are here we have free bicycles & helmets. If you want to stretch your legs after the bus ride it’s about a 30 minute flat walk. Kepler Track is 3.2 km from the hostel, while Lake Henry is 3.4 km from the property. Please be aware, we require all eligible guests to be fully vaccinated and provide their vaccine certificate upon arrival.
While the facilities are clean, comfortable and very well thought out, that is not what makes Bob and Maxine’s the place it is. The hosts are simply out of this world. They go over and above to help you out and we heard countless stories of them helping guests in need. A really friendly vibe among all the guests which could be attributed to the hosts taking the time to introduce guests to each other. Maxine’s thoughtful presents for us were so appreciated and another example of them going over and above for their guests. We will be back!

Tuatapere Motels, Backpackers & Holiday park is a new complex with all the modern facilities, including spa & sauna. Our Motels consist of four fully self contained two bedroom units with own kitchen, bathroom & comfortable lounge with sky to relax in. Our backpackers is a two-storey building that can sleep up to 60 people at a time, a communal lounge upstairs with T.V and table tennis. Opposite the motels and backpackers is a four square supermarket and Highway 99 cafe/bar to provide great drinks & meals. We are the closet accommodation to the hump ridge track.
We are two couples booked months ahead into a motel room to walk Hump ridge track next morning - turned up and found our room had been given to someone else - the only beds available were in a bunk room next door to a common area with a 21st party taking place. Clearly we would not get a good nights sleep here. The staff member on duty was unapologetic and just didn’t know what to do. We left. We met others on the track who stayed at Tui who had a bad nights sleep with noise from the 21st party. Clearly this establishment has no respect for its clients and if hosting a 21st should have made it exclusive to them or at least warned others it would be going on and also at the very least sort it’s booking system out so as to not double book or give someone’s room away! Dodged a bullet not staying there!

Fully equiped and serviced 3 bedroom beachfront house. Main bedroom features queen bed and ensuite, a second queen bedroom and a third bunk room. Open plan lounge, kitchen and dining that opens out onto a beachfront lawn
Location is fabulous if you really want to get away from everything and enjoy the wilderness of The Catlins coast. The house is right on the beach and the view is everything you'd expect. The house meets every basic need, unless you think a tv or dvd option should be included. We would have also appreciated milk for a cuppa being provided, in the same way it was in every other accommodation on our ten day tour, and advice that there are no local food options available on a Monday night. Minor grumbles in the scheme of things. What really fascinated us is that the beach house was the most expensive nightly rate we paid for two people and yet we received the most rudimentary level of comfort. The tariff was even higher than a night in a deluxe king room at the Hilton Hotel in Queenstown!

Tuatara lodge has recently undertaken new ownership
From the moment we arrived we had a bad feel for this place. The front door was locked at 3pm. We had to wait in the cafe for someone to see to us. There was this smell about the place. The place was so cold, not just the temperature but the atmosphere too. The heater in the room did not heat the room at all, kept it on all night and still not warm, slept with 2 duvets still cold all night. No heating in the corridors, I did try to turn it on but nothing. The lounge on floor 1 if you put the kettle and microwave on it trips the electricity so had to take my half cooked porridge upstairs kitchen. What is it with people leaving windows open, it is freezing outside! The fire door in the kitchen on level 2 did not close. We left after one night couldn't bear to stay for the 2nd night we had booked. We had loud music starting at 10pm that vibrated through the floor. Only good thing was the pizzas and beer in the cafe downstairs.

Overlooking the beautiful Lake Te Anau, Lone Moose backpackers provides the perfect retreat in the heart of Fiordland National Park. Whether you are looking to enjoy a summer by the water, or explore the depths of Fiordland year round, Lone Moose Backpackers is your ideal base in one of New Zealand’s most beautifully untouched regions.
Expensive at 125NZD/night for what you get, compared to rest of NZ, but Te Anau in summer is. Very basic old rooms, but clean. Good bed, warm bed linens, but too thick / lumpy pillows. Ensuite very tired but nice to have, and shower warm. Very convenient for drive to Milford Sound. Nice lake views. Restaurant decently priced and quite nice, but book for dinner as only one chef (otherwise you might have to wait - nothing else nearby). Good option for getting to early cruises on the Sound if you don't mind basic accoms. Book direct on their website to save.
