Olde House by Marstons Inns

Better than expected for the price

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a trip to the Peak District for my husband’s 70th birthday. The online pictures of the rooms don’t really do them justice. The one we had (room 6) was larger than we expected for what we paid. It had been refurbished in January apparently. The bed was really comfortable and there was a modern tv and a desk and chair to work at if you needed to. The bathroom was modern and everything was clean and worked. Plenty of hot water. The towels were lovely and soft. There was an over abundance of sockets, if you can have that, but I counted at least 8 of them without taking into account the ones the tv and kettle were plugged into. I have marked it down as I am not a great fan of those bath soap canisters fixed to the wall as I have arthritis and cannot always press hard enough to get anything out and don’t like using the stuff on my hair. but I had brought my own shower gel and shampoo anyway so wasn’t overly put out. There are tea and coffee supplies in the room and wifi is free but the 2 nights we stayed there was a problem and I couldn’t get connected to their own setup but did manage to connect to a BT hotspot using my home broadband account. The receptionist told me that they had already reported the problem and boosters were going to be fitted. The staff were all very friendly and full of local information. The restaurant is very popular but there is a lot of room. The food is ok but not wonderful, typical pub foods but is very cheap and a lot of it.. hotel guests get a 20% discount on top of that so you can’t really complain.

The Old Poets' Corner

Traditional British pub in the heart of the Peak District. Surrounded by beautiful walks and spectacular views. We offer five en-suite rooms and also have a three bedroom cottage attached to the pub. Only a short drive from Bakewell, Matlock and Chesterfield you will always have plenty to do. We offer an excellent menu and a warm welcome and our staff will do everything to make our stay memorable.

Disappointing evening meal

usually find good food and drink in here especially as it is dog friendly, however we had booked earlier and as soon as we tried placing our order, were told there were no chips left. Strangest thing was we were asked how we wanted our beef cooking on the sunday dinner as if it were a steak ready for the grill. I had assumed it had been slow cooking all day. well when it arrived it was tougher than boot leather. I think they had heated it up in the microwave. Even the dog struggled as we channeled it all under the table for him. The pies weren't much better, they were identical in appearance. I dont think they are cooked on site anymore and look very much like Pukkas. They were served with a slim dose of salad and veg due to no chips.....but with gravy too. We finished up, Didnt bother with desert or extra drinks and am sorry to say will try another pub in the village next time. I saw nothing of the usual owners only members of younger staff........such a shame for a venue that is ideally placed to give excellent food and service in a prime Derbyshire location

CHARMING CHURCH VILLA AND HOSTS

Reviewed By T7299RLdeniseb

Everything about our stay at Church Villa was wonderful, from being warmly welcomed by Hilary and Graham with a cup of tea by a roaring fire, to entering the beautiful Hardwick room with an amazing bed and spacious bathroom. What a way to begin our short break in Derbyshire. Our room was serviced every day with tea and biscuits etc being replenished each time. Everything that we needed to make our stay comfortable was there; we especially liked the little night light. Breakfast was delicious with a wide choice of food, that was served hot and in plenty of time. Thank you Hilary and Graham for such a lovely stay. Your knowledge and advice about places to visit was very much appreciated.

Best hotel we stayed at in England!

The Peacock was an absolutely lovely inn, room very comfy with plenty of USB charging capacity, gleaming luxury bathroom, right outside was the restaurant where we had dinner and breakfast, all in a quaint little village with a beautiful view. Convenient as well, just 20 minute drives to Chatsworth and the Monsal bicycle trail hire shop. We stayed four different places during out trip through England and this was hands-down the favorite. I would definitely stay there again.
