Big Shoals State Park

What a wonderful afternoon! We entered through the Big Shoals entrance and went down the dirt road which was well-maintained. The parking lot is paved and there are nice, clean restrooms before you head down the trail. We ate our lunch at one of the half dozen or so picnic tables and then headed down the trail with our dog. The trail is just beautiful: well-shaded and serene, right along the riverbank. Not many elevation changes, but there are exposed roots and some stretches that were covered in pine needles and could possibly be slippery. I don't recommend flip flops, but laced sneakers should be just fine. There were even a couple complimentary walking sticks available at the entrance. :) As we got closer to the shoals, we could actually HEAR the water - not a typical sound in flat Florida! The water was low, which didn't make for rapids but made for a series of very small waterfalls that were soothing and so enjoyable. It was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Orlando - we really look forward to going back!

I knew the music, did not know Stephen Foster wrote all of it. I sang all these songs growing up, Oh, Susanna, Camptown Races, etc. This was a small but well worth it museum. The grounds are beautiful. The bell tower, one of a kind. If you are visiting the north part of Florida you should make time to visit this museum and park.
