As you can see from the previous reviews we just love this place. We took friends there on our way through to show them the lovely National Park and to our great delight found that New Country Swamp was full of water. A park ranger dropped and he said that he hadn’t seen it like that for about 14 years. The bird life was amazing and it was great to see water running from the highland swamp down into Mummel Gulf. The Mummel River forms part of the headwaters of the Manning River. Just on a short note the Oxley Highway is closed at the moment due to landslides as is Enfield Forest Road. We found this out and had to make a 3 hour detour via Nowendoc to then proceed down to the coast.

A short 1km off the Oxley Hwy, drive through the arch to a variety of car parks, that lead to numerous lookouts and walks, including across a suspension bridge

Just 10 minutes off the highway, Tia Falls are spectacular. The 5-10 minute mostly level walk from the carpark takes you to a wonderful viewing platform where you can see the entire multi-tier waterfall. We definitely recommend walking the 150 metres beyond the viewing platform to look out and down upon the gorge. Back at the carpark are excellent free BBQ’s, picnic tables and a clean public toilet. Totally worth the visit.

We had a great time on this walk and would definitely recommend. Having said this, we also did find it pretty challenging! We are a group in our 50's and regular walkers and did the track in late Feb. The first day is a great warm up, finishing at Birds Nest Hut - all the huts are very comfortable with chairs and camp stretchers for sleeping, although they are pretty small so would be cozy for a party of 6 . We did find a lot of mice so be sure to secure your food and hand it up (not sure if this is a seasonal issue?). Be sure to take plenty of water on the second day - the walk down the ridge to Green Gully Hut is long with not a lot of shade - certainly in late Feb this was hot and energy sapping. Still a beautiful, if not gruelling descent! The river is a definite highlight ... just keep walking and enjoy it, you will get there eventually :). The tank water at Colwells Hut was kind of brown so instead we drank treated river water and had no problems. And you can sleep under the awing even if it is raining, much nicer than being inside and you will get to meet the resident brush tail possum as well. And as for the last day, well yep, it's steep, but every step is a step closer to cold beer. There was water in Birds Nest Creek after the main climb so it should be possible to fill up bottles there rather than lug the extra litres up the climb - probably best to check with returning walkers to make sure it is flowing rather than risk running out of water. Biggest tip .. take poles!! Not sure I would have made it without them.
