We had a wonderful two-hour cruise with Captain Phil. Will return again with friends and family. I can't recommend this more highly. From the comfortable boat to the warm and friendly captain/host, to the beauty of the water and wildlife, you will not be sorry.

We were introduced to this course by a member but the public are sure of a friendly welcome. The 18 hole course consists of two very different 9's the first hilly and narrow and the second flatter and wider but still a challenge. The sixteenth is interesting with a split fairway making for an interesting choice of drive on this par 5. The clubhouse has an excellent pro-shop and restaurant overlooking the 18th green. We have played this course a number of times and hope to come back for more!

This place is much bigger than it looks, and has an impressive collection. Exhibits include Middlesex County Schools, Children in Middlesex, Story of Irene Morgan, black history, fossils and native American artifacts, and a salute to our military starting from the Revolutionary War. Chesty Puller, the most decorated Marine who lived around the corner from the museum has a prominent place. Life in Middlesex is featured as is a well stocked country store. Next door is the annex which houses a Visitor Center. In the next block by the Old Historic Court House is the Old Clerk's Office where P. T. Woodward worked. He saved the county records during the Civil War, refusing to send them to Richmond. Middlesex is one of the few counties in the state to have nearly all of their records dating from the mid-1600s

We spent a fascinating hour here learning about the Chesapeake Bay's past with steamboat travel, both for passengers and cargo. The knowledgeable docent gave us a brief introductory tour, then left us on our own to watch videos, look at exquisitely detailed models, read info about steamboat building and individual captains. It was well worth the $5 admission charge.

The Dog and Oyster Vineyard

The Dog and Oyster is an extraordinary vineyard owned by The Hope and Glory Inn. Come sip some of America's best wine and savor the world's best oysters on site.

There are so many great things to say about The Dog and Oyster Vineyard. The setting is anything but pretentious! The hosts, Peggy and Dudley Patteson, along with their entire staff make everyone feel welcome and taken care of. Delicious wines along with AMAZING food prepared by Bryan Byrd, owner/operator of Byrd's Seafood Co. make this a "must go to" anytime you're on the Northern Neck. Let me tell you ~ I know soft shell crabs and Bryan prepares them better than any I've ever eaten! Additionally, his oysters are sublime ~ just about any way you like 'em, including tacos! The food and wine pairing are perfect. Sitting out under umbrellas, sipping wine, and enjoying a bite to eat is delightful and just too civilized in a world gone bonkers! Cheers! Proost! Na zdravi! Egészségére! À votre santé! Salute! Prost! Na zdrowie! Salud!

The Spa at the Tides Inn

Tranquility is yours at the Tides Inn, one of Virginia's leading resort spas. This Chesapeake Bay spa offers a range of classic spa treatments, salon offerings and soothing spa products. Each treatment is designed to pamper, nourish and feed your mind, body and soul...with a variety of spa packages and treatments ranging from massages and facials to body treatments and specialty offerings.

We have been visiting the Tides Inn for about 5 years now, and I always try to leave time for a massage and/or pedicure at the spa. The spa has a welcoming, relaxing atmosphere, and offers a variety of delicious herbal teas for you to enjoy either before or after your treatment. The spa consistently hires very competent staff, who provide soothing facials, relaxing massages and gentle pedicures. If you book a massage, you have a choice between a male or female therapist, and in my experience, the therapists are careful to discuss your preferences, concerns and medical issues before beginning any massage. I especially recommend the hot stone massage for stiff and/or sore back muscles. The spa's prices are on the high side, but usually worth it. The spa also features an attractive gift shop with various skin products, books on meditation, music CDs, clothing and jewelry. This spa is one of my most favorite places to relax and pamper myself!

Patricio is the best masseuse I've ever had, hands down. A retired veterinarian, he knows anatomy, muscle structure from the inside out, and has no hesitancy of completely massaging every muscle deeply and thoroughly, with inventive use of the hot stones. He's responsive to what the client wants and has extremely strong muscles himself to deliver the level of massage as he does. And there was no solicitation at all (to buy oils, etc). If I lived closer, I'd have a standing appointment at least weekly with him.

Belle Isle State Park

Reviewed By Taylor B - Chicago, Illinois

The first thing I learned while researching and planning our trip to Belle Isle State Park in Lancaster County, Virginia, that more than a few travelers have confused the 892-acre park with seven miles of shoreline on the Northern Neck's Rappahannock River with the island of Belle Isle in the James River in Richmond, Virginia. Visit them both but be aware which is which. Belle Isle State Park is located near the unincorporated towns of Litwalton, Morattico and Somers on Route 3 in Lancaster County. It is a peninsula surrounded by Tidewater coastal marshes. There are facilities for camping, fishing, boating and picnics. Wildlife observed include blue herons, osprey, hawks, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, turkeys, rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, moles and various reptiles and amphibians. The property was acquired in 1692 by John Bertrand and Belle Isle mansion was built in 1760 and restored in the 1940s. The house, which is privately owned, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. However, there are two other houses in the park that can be rented for overnight stays. Meanwhile, the park has a campground with RV lots, tent sites and trailer rentals. A boat launch and rental boats also are available in the park. The trail system includes a mix of hiking-only and multi-use trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. There also are three picnic shelters. Bicycle, canoe, kayak and motorboat rentals are available. It is tricky to get there but you won't regret the trip. From Warsaw, take State Route 3 east to SR 354. Turn right and follow for three miles, turn right onto SR 683 at Somers to the park entrance. From Kilmarnock, take Route 3 West to Lively, then left on SR 201 for three times, then right on SR 354 for three miles and left onto 683 to the park entrance. Once you are there, you'll realize you aren't in Richmond.
