If you see nothing else here in Salerno, you must visit the Crypt of the Cathedral. This magnificent space opens up at the base of stairs from the main Cathedral and is truly breathtaking, All the walls are of inlaid marble with a ceiling of beautiful paintings. There is an altar to San Matteo who is the patron saint of Salerno surrounded by more beauty, The workmanshp in this special place is truly amazing. On this trip we have visited many museums and cathedrals....this is by far the most beautiful.

in the 13th century the Basilica was one of the most beautiful in Southern Italy: a breath-taking view together with Marbles, wall paintings and multicoloures inlays, which coult be seen even from sea. Still today you can admire the splendid facade of the basilica, and there are also some original parts.
Visited while walking from Scala to Amalfi. Paid a donation to walk around. The site is basic, but the views over the valleys are unmissable. Lots of steps to get to and from, so wear comfortable shoes.
