In the 1600's, on the banks of the Saugus River, something extraordinary happened. Explore the place where European iron makers brought their special skills to a young Massachusetts colony. This nine-acre National Park includes working waterwheels, hot forges, mills, an historic 17th century home and a lush river basin.
The Saugus Iron Works has something for everybody – the recreated and operational buildings of an early colonial iron works, a picturesque location on a tidal river, a restored 1680’s house, and rangers who know how give tours that are informative, interesting, and fun – all for free. The visitor center offered a friendly greeting, a map, information on tours, and a nice gift shop. We stopped at the small museum and watched a short, but comprehensive, video before joining the 2:15 Industrial site tour. You can visit the buildings and grounds on your own (with or without the audio guide downloaded from the park’s website), but we learned so much on Ranger Paul’s tour. He explained every step of the iron making process as we walked through the blast furnace, forge, and rolling and splitting mill. Another ranger operated the waterwheels that ran the huge bellows in the blast furnace and the machinery in the splitting mill. We followed our tour of the industrial site and grounds with Ranger Kevin’s excellent tour of the 1680’s house. I appreciated the consideration given to the human history here – from the Pawtucket to the Puritans, from the Scots prisoners of war brought in as indentured servants to the people involved in finding and restoring this amazing site. We’ve visited 4 National Historical Sites in Massachusetts this summer, and this was our favorite.

I feel fortunate to have Breakheart in my community. The Visitor's Center is equipped with function rooms, kitchen, bathroom, and a large function area with a gorgeous fireplace. The reservation is 652 acres in the towns of Saugus and Wakefield, Massachusetts. The reservation has 2 freshwater lakes, a dog park, many hiking trails, and beautiful views. Many people take their dogs for walks, so make sure your dog is leashed and you have a bag to pick-up their droppings. There is parking, but many times, especially over the spring/summer/fall months, it is filled. If that's the case, you can park in the Kasubuski rink area or in back of the Target strip mall. There are also various functions that go on at Breakheart throughout the year, including maple sugaring, the Fall Festival, and other environmental events for the whole family.
