Benin’s turbulent history is on display here, from its prosperous 17th century beginnings as the African Dahomey kingdom and 19th century invasion by the French to its 1960 independent Marxist regime and present-day democracy.

Visiting many Islamic communities all over the world, we have never ever encountered a mosque that looks like a Brazilian church. It is amazing, colorful, magnificent writings in Arabic on the outside wall (look at the facade on the other side). A real gem. However, like all other old Portuguese building, it is crumbling. What a shame, such an incredible monument.
