The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm. Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.
Archaeologists were working beneath the large dome over the site the day we were there. It was the first time we had seen any such work and it was quite interesting. There also are exhibits to view and if one has an interest in such...MoreThank you for your comments. It always surprise folks who are not aware that we are an active archaeological site when they come here and see the archaeologists excavating. For us, it is the most exciting time of year!

This ornate auditorium has served as a meeting place and performing venue for more than 75 years.
On our way to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, we drove by the Corn Palace and stopped in. You really don't need a ton of time to enjoy this unique place so if it's on your way, you really should take an hour or so and enjoy it.

My daughters and I left Corn Palace, with the "Dad's Corn Palace was a dud" air floating about, and then I spotted to the right a curious looking castle building. It displayed a sign showing that there was a free walk through for kids. What the heck, let's go see.
WOW!!! What a great Americana type place!! Such a neat attraction, and free. We had a blast looking at the displays, and having the girls (9 and 11) crawl through the exploration areas and going down the slide.
We meandered for about 30 minutes (we could have stayed longer, but needed to get back on the road) inside, smiling, taking pictures, and having some very interesting discussions caused by the displays. We also overheard a staff member (probably the owner) interacting with guests as they came in, talking about all sorts of things that made it clear he is a genuine, good, caring soul ... and this is reflected in his attraction/shop.
As the name might imply, the displays are weighted towards a religious nature but if you aren't a "religious" person, you would still enjoy the home-grown displays. They are so interesting and curious to look at.
Having been seduced by all the Corn Palace signs, I was super eager to finally see the Corn Palace. However, the true gem of Mitchell is right across the street, at Valtiroty Shiloh's Tabernacle. And it saved the "Dad's Road-side pull off" adventure.
So, the seed planted by the Corn Palace germinated into something amazing, a visit to Valtiroty Shiloh's Tabernacle. Stopping in Mitchell, if you're doing a long road trip, for the Corn Palace alone isn't worth it ... but stopping at VST is. Do both, see the corny corn but then go meander through VST, and talk with the people there. Pretty cool.

Dakota Discovery Museum tells the story of people who came to the northern Plains. We preserve that past and inform the present by uniquely combining art and artifact to tell the story of this region in a way that contributes to building the future of the people of the Dakotas.
The indigenous people, explorers, pioneers, artisans.... all the original movers/shakers and their good works await your perusal and enjoyment! And, a most delightful docent named Rod, may enhance your experience with interesting, pertinent, yet obscure bits of knowledge. That's the short and sweet of our...MoreShari & George: Thanks very much for stopping by. We really appreciate your visit and hope that if you travel this way again, we can have the opportunity to host you for another visit to Dakota Discovery Museum. Best, Rod B.

The museum does a nice job of providing an overview of George McGovern's life. We were the only ones visiting on a Thursday morning. It is free - but a $5 donation is suggested. We enjoyed listening to the 4 or 5 videos.

The Carnegie is one of the old such libraries that managed to escape the fate of being torn down, which is always a sad thing to see happen to a part of our nation's history, a history that saw us struggling to make a way for a burgeoning, but perhaps still fragile, middle class.
This library is worth a five minute walk or so, in good weather, to see the extra Corn Palace memorabilia that it holds, as well as see some of the art work of one of the Corn Palace's greatest artists - Oscar Howe.
Dont expect to be wowed off your feet. It's just a nice diversion with a bit extra exercise for car weary legs. It's free to go in. Though if you can spare a donation to assist with preservation, there is a jar for that.

Very nice check in lady. Very helpful. Clean restrooms and showers. Cute little beach and relatively clear water. The sunset over the water was spectacular when we were there. Very relaxing place to spend a night while traveling or even longer to scope out the area. You won't be disappointed.

Great place to spend an afternoon. When temps are warm this is the place to be. Many young families are here to play. Nice picnic area and playground just outside the pool fence line.
