While touring Northland we decided to stop at the Kawiti caves to see the glow worms. This is a whānau run operation, as our guide Summer explained - this cave is on land held by her whānau for hundreds of years. We waited in the picnic area for the tour to start and were entertained by a few cheeky piwakawaka that seemed almost tame, they came so close. Summer guided us through the caves, explaining the features of limestone and the glow worm lifecycle. The three main caverns have varying numbers of glow worms; the most spectacular is the middle cavern- the Milky Way. We could see the glow worms up close by the light of the lanterns provided. At the end of the tour Summer sang a beautiful waiata in the Milky Way cavern- such a magical experience! At the end of the cave tour, we explored the bushwalk. Overall this was well worth the entry price!

We visited this wahi tapu site recently on a trip up north. It's a beautiful trip on a gravel road, easy road to handle if you just drive slowly - with views for miles as the road climbs, and there were a lot of hunting hawks on the day we visited. It's easy to get to both sites of battle - the British camp and Ruapekapeka Pa, both well kept and the history of the area explained and displayed graphically and well. The sites are clean and well maintained, and it's very easy, as you walk around, to see how clever the design of Ruapekapeka Pa was. If you are interested in Aotearoa/NZ's history, this is absolutely worth a visit.

Kings Theatre Creative is the largest art gallery in the Bay of Islands. Representing over 300 local artists it is certainly an experience with the vibrant, creative and bicultural talent Taitokerau/Northland has to offer. Kings Theatre was build in 1936's and operated as a movie cinema 'the Showplace of the Bay of Islands' until 1976; the theatre has been operating as a creative trust for three years and offers a Foyer Gallery, a larger Theatre Gallery and back stage studio space for artist studio's. The space is manned by artist and writer volunteers and brings a Seasonal Programme of exhibitions, events and workshops to our community and manuhiri (visitors). Nau mai Haere mai,

I was skeptical about this tourist attraction. the photos make it look like.. a funky toilet, but still.. a toilet. However, what a pleasant surprise! Its more than a cool toilet, this is functional art. the new museum is very cool as well, gives more context about the art and the artist, with photos of his incredible buildings and gorgeous posters he made on the theme of conservation. absolutely worth a stop!

Hundertwasser Memorial Park in Kawakawa township is a park in development stages as of August 2016. It is planned to provide a peaceful green area as a tribute to the artist/architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser who designed and built the Hundertwasser Toilet Building in Kawakawa and lived in the area until his untimely passing. The trees are presently young, but the area is a pleasant area to walk or sit and have lunch away from the Main Street of Kawakawa. Access to the Park and it's carparking is via Mackereth Lane, Kawakawa.

Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail travels from coast to harbour, wetlands, native forest and significant heritage sites. Our Twin Coast trail opens with a beautiful sunrise and closes in the west with a spectacular sunset.
