9 Things to do in Government Camp That You Shouldn't Miss

April 10, 2022 Janette Largent

Government Camp is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States, south of Mount Hood and north of Tom Dick and Harry Mountain. It is the only town within 5 miles (8 km) of Mount Hood and therefore is the de facto "mountain town". It is a gateway to several ski resorts, the most popular being Timberline Lodge and Mount Hood Skibowl. Government Camp also has its own, smaller ski resort, Summit Ski Area. Somewhat farther east there is another very popular resort, Mount Hood Meadows.

Mt Hood Cultural Center and Museum

Reviewed By S49M - Portland, United States

Another couple joined us to visit this small museum hidden away in the heart of Government Camp on Mt. Hood. Their exhibits run the gamut from early Euro-American settlement in the area, to fine arts and historic photographs, to Forest Service management, to Steiner cabins, to the history of ski clubs surrounding Mt. Hood, among others. We've visited a few times in the past and were disappointed that their room with the excellent exhibits displaying the history of skiing, snow shoeing, and sledding equipment was closed during this visit. The Museum also has a small gift shop. Although there is no entry fee, I encourage visitors to leave a donation to help them continue their fine work and grow their collections.

Trillium Lake

This is a place worth visiting for adults and families with young children. Trillium Lake is a truly beautiful lake with an impressive view of Mount Hood in the background providing a double image with its lake reflection for photographs. There are easy walks around the lake to offer a different perspective of the gorgeous lake. There is adequate on site parking.

All the staff are amazing here and very helpful and if you are going with your kiddos try out the inter tube sledding area it’s great or if you enjoy snowboarding or want to ski check out the great lifts. Parking does fill up fast even in the morning time and this place is very busy but it’s my favorite place to go

We visited on Labor Day weekend. It was crowded, but due to COVID, less crowded than a typical holiday weekend. We did the Alpine Slide, the zip lines -- and in a first for my wife and I, the bungee jump. It was a little scary, but exciting.
