With our out of town guests.....from Kansas City, MO, we went to the Twin Oaks Winery for a tasting round. Five drinks for $5.00, plus a place to sit at the bar with our friends. It was really enjoyable and we all found wines that we did like and enjoy. Just a great hour there!!!!

Castor River Shut-Ins

Reviewed By Kathy D - Saint Louis, Missouri

The first time I heard of Castor River Shut-Ins, it was the cover photo of Missouri Conservationist magazine. I knew right away I wanted to go there sometime. The bluffs and boulders are pink granite, and you can climb around the rocks and waterways to your heart's content. At the end of the shut-ins is a 4-foot waterfall and a crystal clear swimming hole. Take a snorkel mask, and you will see a lot of colorful fish.

Get good directions. Park in the lot. Take a short hike (less than a mile) to the top of the shut-ins. You can stop there, or you can continue downstream, either along a path, or wading through the water. At the end of the shut-ins is a lovely swimming hole, where my family can spend hours.

Well, we drove quite a ways to visit only to be told that you have to be 21 and over to enter. Who would be silly enough to exclude so many potential customers? I forsee chapter 11 in the near future. Hopefully someone with a better business sense will buy the property.

Sand Creek Vineyard & Winery

Some folks recommended this place, so we stopped by while hitting some of the nearby wineries. I'm shocked this place has the reviews it does. The lady behind the counter knew very little about wine in general, but did know a little about her wine. To one comment about the seemingly high sugar content (not natural sugar, but added sugar), she rudely replied "Of course we add lots of sugar. That's how folks around here like it."

Frankly, there are so many better wineries in the area, I'd skip this one.

A nice vineyard that we would highly recommend! The owner (Papa) was there & what a friendly guy! It's a small place, but well worth the stop. Best part were the sangria's, two flavors that were both the best I've ever tasted. Their pizza's are wonderful also! We will definitely be returning here.

Crown Valley Brewing and Distilling

We stayed at the Brew House/Moonshine House right next to the Brewery-Distillery. It was very convenient to just walk a short distance to the Brewery.

There is a wide variety of things to drink for those non-wine drinkers at the Brewery. The inside bar is very large. You can purchase merchandise inside. The outside has a huge patio seating area with a large fire pit overlooking the countryside. You have to go inside to get your drinks and food. The day they we were there they had hotel lounge type music on the patio. The weather was beautiful.

It was fun to try new drinks and share with friends.

I'm not a huge wine fan, but I tried all of their beers. Very impressive!

Their coffee stout wasn't only the best of the beers we tried, it's the best coffee beer I've ever tried.

They also had a huge cheese and sausage plate. A must try!!
