Okinawa Prefecture Karate Museum

Reviewed By 381kieranb

The 1st original Karate / Kobudo museum in the world. The Okinawa prefecture Karate Kobudo museum is situated on the 2nd floor, above the Hokama Karate Dojo (International Kenshikai HQ). This is a fully working Dojo, with weekly classes for local students and private lessons for visitors (Y3,000 by request). Many people visit the museum while training is taking place down stairs and this creates a fantastic atmosphere. Hokama Sensei is a 10th Dan Karate Hanshi (Goju Ryu) and 10th Dan Kobudo Hanshi (Matayoshi Kobudo). Now 75 years old, he has been training since he was 7 years old! As well as being a world class martial arts master, he is recognised by the Japanese government as a historian. He has written over 30 books on martial arts history. He is also a master of Shodo - the art of Japanese calligraphy. Custom Shodo is available during your visit. Mr Hokama will write anything you like i.e. name of your Dojo, childs name etc. on wood or paper. You can either bring your own item, or purchase at the museum.

I found this an interesting place. Amazing its still remains and as such I consider this a must see. Free shuttle bus from the mall and it also stops at the castle. We walked from the Castle to here, 10 min walk mainly flat and good surfaces. We tayd about an hour here.

Yachimun no Sato

I’ve always loved pottery and was super excited to go to the village. It was so nice to meander and poke about the studios. You can see how they cater to the tourists but you can also do the unique pieces as well. Not all the studios were open and you couldn’t really see the artists at work but it was still awesome to walk around and check out all the pottery. We bought some for ourselves, our friends and family.

AEON MALL Okinawa Rycom

This huge mall is spread over four floors and has a range of shops, restaurants, a movie theatre, and even an aquarium! You'll find everything you need for a day of shopping and indoor entertainment.

Reviewed By BZimm08 - Iwakuni, Japan

I'm not much of a mall person but this one is different. I recently moved to the island and needed stuff from Nitori and Daiso and sure enough both stores are located here. When I first entered the main entrance I was blown away by how big and clean the mall was. There is a beautiful fish tank on the first floor. There are many great shops, restaurants, and a grocery stores here. I have been here a few times now and have walked all the floors and I think there is something for everyone here. I like Mont Bell and Bic Camera which are also here. The restaurants range from bakeries and fast food to local restaurants and fine dining. Once I was here on a rainy Sunday and it was a nightmare, so I would say avoid rainy days and potentially weekends.
