The karst formation of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has evolved since the Paleozoic (some 400 million years ago) and so is the oldest major karst area in Asia. Subject to massive tectonic changes, the park’s karst landscape is extremely complex with many geomorphic features of considerable significance. The vast area, extending to the border of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, contains spectacular formations including 65 kilometers of caves and underground rivers.

If you’re interested in seeing parts of Vietnam that are off the main road, and experience adventure, Vietnamese culture, and historic tales told by an epic tour guide, then check out adventure cycling with Pvt. Shi. Private Shi - a nickname of Shi, a local guy whose passion is cycling, would love to show you this area through one of his guided bicycle tours. Adventure cycling includes crossing peanut fields by bicycle, visiting the house of Ho Khanh who found the world’s largest cave, and cycling the historical Ho Chi Minh trail. You’ll have the chance to learn how rice is grown, and if it’s harvesting time, you may even have the chance to help out local farmers in farming rice. Or you might want to choose a tour which visits a local rice wine shop where you can learn how to make rice wine! Most tours in Phong Nha route through Bong Lai, a countryside valley famous for its farm-to-table experiences and incredible fresh food. Pvt. Shi arranges shorter tours in and around Phong Nha, as well as longer tours such as cycling Phong Nha to Hue via the DMZ. His bikes are well-maintained classic mountain bikes (with helmets provided of course); child bikes are available upon request. These excursions encompass everything a tour needs - storytelling, history, and a heaping dose of adventure. You are encouraged to complete a stage of 20 km up to 70 km cycling a day to voyage through the Cave Kingdom! The cycling adventures are wonderful for ones who love to dive into the beauty of Vietnamese culture, eat great food, swim in pristine waters, and see what lies off the beaten path!

Son Doong Cave is in the heart of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province. This incredible cave was only explored in 2009/2010 by the British Cave Research Association. Situated in the deep jungle, the entrance to the cave was found by a local jungle man Mr Ho Khanh. Son Doong Cave is now the largest cave in the world and has understandably been the attention of many film companies such as the BBC, National Geographic, Japanese and Brazilian teams. It also featured in National Geographic Magazine in 2011. Son Doong cave is unlike any other caves on the planet. Inside this giant cave are two huge daylight windows which allows the light to enter many parts of the cave. At the base of these windows are large jungles which use the available light and so trees up to 30m tall are present. But Son Doong is not only about its immense size, the cave has amazing examples of some of the best speleothems in the world. Giant stalagmites up to 80m high and enormous rimstone pools are present throughout the cave. There are also excellent examples of giant cave pearls and a newly discovered side passage is full of large fossils over 300 million years old. As well as rare species of plants in the cave a number of new species of animals have recently been discovered. Monkeys, hornbills and flying foxes have all been seen in the jungle section of the caves.
Everything we expected and more. The caves and jungle are out of this world. Every minute was an experience to remember, each day was unique and delightful on its own. This was a tour full of different challenges and beauty, I was able to take in and enjoy the four days my own way and my husband his own way. The feeling of safety was not a question, there are expert tour guides in front and at the back of you at all times. The guides were the best at what they are there for( your safety). They were extremely caring and professional. We felt honored to have Dr. Howard Limbert and Heiu on the tour. Don’t think there’s anything out there that will top this once in a life time experience, thank you Oxalis adventure.

The spectacular system of underground rivers and passages still has some Cham altars from the 10th century.
I loved and preferred the phong nha cave instead of the paradise cave (still we have been there at both) It was amazing inside, the water is so beautiful and you have a good mixture of going by boat and going by feet
