This is a wonderful Church set in the back streets of Ceret but has its own presence when reached with much space around it, the interior has much of interest to see and admire.

I agree with reviewer Sy C that this rather lovely statue is different from the usual style of War Memorial. It is of a seated woman with hand on head and, in my opinion, is a perfect study of sadness and contemplation. The statue is actually called “Suffering” and, dating from 1922, is by north Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol. In 1919 the town of Ceret asked Maillol to create a War Memorial in memory of the 151 “children” of the town who gave their lives in the First World War. And the words from the town information pamphlet are perfect: “Catalan in style, strong and with simple lines as only Maillol knew how to do, this larger than life woman asks us to reflect and to contemplate.” This is a lovely statue and I thank reviewer Sy C for bringing it to my attention.
