We arrived in Hopkins with no reservations. We checked out a few different places in the Hotel Zone...our fourth stop was here and we knew we had to stay here for a least a couple of nights. We had an amazing room, actually like a lovely condo, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, living area and dining room. Pool right out side our door and the ocean just beyond that. Free bikes, kayaks, tubes, paddle boards, rope swing...used them all! The staff, from the front desk to housekeeping, to the sargassam removers to security, everyone was friendly, helpful and a pleasure to get to know. Captain Larry has an amazing spirit! James and Nicki had helpful hints and were very nice guys. After a couple of nights there enjoying our surroundings and Hopkins itself, we decided to 7 nights there. Love it. Highly recommend!! We ate at the restaurant a number of times and everything was delicious!

Lots of potential

Reviewed By taliward

Hopkins Bay We arrived to a warm welcome and our names on the blackboard at the front of the hotel welcoming us! We were then asked for a driving licence to check in. We are from the UK and didn't plan on driving in Belize and so mine was at home. Luckily my husband had his. We've never been asked for this ever before at check in and so not sure what would have happened if we didn't have this. ROOM Our room, 1502, was the guest room of the 3 bedroom unit and the smallest bedroom and bathroom but still a good size and very clean. They did open our room up to the kitchen which gave us an extra huge space but we didn't really use this too much. One of the other rooms came off this and there was a large gap in the door. We spent the first day whispering not wanting to disturb them and didn't feel like we could use the space. The couple in this room moved the second day to a beach front villa and we felt a little more relaxed. The third unit is upstairs and the under stairs has a cupboard with padlocked cupboard doors into the guest room we were in.....it's a louvre style door and so lets in every bit of sound. As a result we slept badly as we could hear every sound. Fortunately they seemed to have checked out after this one night and so the other two nights we slept well. The villas are great for families but I just don't think they work at all in their current state for separate couples. Apparently our guide said the hotel does get a lot of comments about a certain kind of nightly activity keeping people awake!! The room itself was lovely. A great size, air conditioning and a ceiling fan and the decor was nice. The bedside lights had to be switched off at the switch by the bathroom and I always prefer a switch by the bed to do this. The bed was very comfortable and there was a safe provided. The bathroom was decorated in bright blue tiles and a really pretty sink. There were large bottles of body wash and conditioner and so bring shampoo (if you prefer separate items) and body lotion. The shower was fine and powerful enough. I didn't have a hairdryer and so asked for this just after check in, it wasn't there before my shower and so I asked again and hopped in the shower. It still wasn't there after getting ready and so I ended up going to reception with a towel on my head still and waiting about 10 minutes for them to find one. It was a good hairdryer in the end but it's a shame it took so long to get when it should have been in the room on arrival. The other odd thing was that we had only two hangers in the room which had robes on. We ended up putting the robes on a top shelf and had just one hanger each which was odd as the wardrobe was pretty big. The hotel is into greener living and so provides all guests with a water bottle which is great as we'd left ours at home. We had a water dispenser in the room which we could refill our bottles with which was excellent. We had an outside deck area which felt pretty private even though it was shared with a another unit as the areas have a little recess. We bought breakfast from Jashlenn's in town (only open Saturdays) and ate this on the deck one morning in the sunshine and it was glorious. However, be careful about the evening.....we got bitten so much in just 5 minutes on our first night by little bugs that make you bleed immediately. The bites didn't itch but left little red circular spots which lasted about two weeks. We didn't seem to get it elsewhere in Hopkins. POOLS/BEACH/WATER SPORTS/ACTIVITIES On arrival they apologised to us about the sargassum but told us there were two beautiful pools and water sports we could still enjoy. One pool was really busy with kids and so we went to the other and it was very green and so we couldn't get in. On our last day one guest was in the pool as we walked by and the guy from the restaurant approached her and we assume advised her to get out as she promptly left. I wouldn't have got in it if you'd paid me but there were no signs up to say not to use it. We did get time to use the other pool the next afternoon and it was pleasant and a really good temperature. The beach was fine despite the sargassum and I can only imagine how lovely it is when it's not there en masse. There were beach chairs to use, hammocks and fixed shades. It was all fine. We didn't try the water sports but others were giving it a go and enjoying them. We loved the bikes we could use to cycle into town. They were a little older but worked fine and were free. No locks but we didn't feel we needed them in Hopkins. We wanted to take a couple of trips out but the hotel has a set schedule and the trips we wanted were not running on the days we wanted. So we went to Get To Know Belize for our excursions to Cockscomb Basin and our chocolate making experience which were both brilliant. FOOD Upon check in we were given a welcome sheet which had a few QR codes and one was for the restaurant. There were a couple of veggie options on there and so decided to try it out for lunch. On arrival at the restaurant we were told that was an old menu and the new one was on the board in front of us. It didn't have a single veggie option so the waiter had to go and ask the chef to make something up. What came was rice and beans, a bit of salad and some plantain. It was fine to fill a gap but not great. The evening menu had a veggie tofu curry and I can't stand tofu and so we ate out in town for every lunch and dinner after this. We tried breakfast one day and it was okay but not great and compared to town, expensive. When we did sit down I scratched my finger on a staple that was sticking out of the table. I felt around the edges of the table and there were sharp staples poking out all over. I think they must have stapled table covers onto the tables the night before and had neglected to removed the sharp staples which was not good. We saw the same waiter pulling these out on our last day. The atmosphere in the restaurant was subdued and it didn't feel like a place we wanted to be. In contrast, Hopkins town was so friendly and we loved being out of the hotel. HOTEL GROUNDS There is a lot of potential here. The buildings look nice, there is some beautiful planting and the pools are pleasant but there are missing details. For instance, the edging of the path is broken in several places. If you have kids they could hurt themselves on this. The lights lining the paths need attention too as some have totally broken shades and others partly broken and it just looks a little unloved. We liked the welcome area with a cute little sink just before reception but the reception area seemed a little dark and sparse and needs a little love. There was building work going on by the pool on one of the bars but it didn't really impact us at all. HOPKINS We loved it! On arrival we were told to go out into town and enjoy the community. Admittedly we were a little nervous but we hopped on the bikes and stopped by Jashlenn's for breakfast the following day, Shadel's Magic Pastry Shop for punch and the supermarket. So many people waved and said hi. And it just got better. At night, we mostly walked into town and back and felt totally safe. One night after a 6km hike and 6mile bike ride we did take the complimentary hotel shuttle into town which ran until round 9pm. We could have asked the restaurant to call the hotel to get a lift back but we didn't mind the walk and we had so many people wish us a lovely evening. Try Ella's, JJs, Driftwood, Swinging Armadillo, Nice Cream and North Side Cool Spot for breakfast (pancakes are the best I've tasted!). We cycled to Jaguar Reef and back which is in the hotel zone. It's definitely more upmarket and holiday-like this end of town but it's missing the magic of central Hopkins! If we stayed at Jaguar Reef we wouldn't have come out here as much and we just had the best time in Hopkins town. OVERALL The hotel has a lot of potential. I think once the little maintenance issues are sorted and the rooms are configured to allow separate couples to stay there comfortably this places has so much to offer. I'd like to see the menu incorporate at least two vegetarian options and I would love to feel a better vibe here as the staff seemed a little more into their phones at times than service (very different feel to the great customer service we had by email before our stay and from the lovely drivers we had on our night shuttle and to take us to the airport). Generally, we felt far happier out of the hotel than in it which is not typical and for me a trip/hotel is all about the way it makes you feel. However, the bones are here to build something great and the location is brilliant.

Short trip, but lovely!

Bocawina was such an amazing adventure! We spent two nights here and that certainly wasn't enough. We caught the Floralia bus line to get there and the staff were kind enough to pick us up from the terminal. We arrived a bit late to do some of the main activities, so that first evening was spent just walking around the grounds - which are gorgeous. We had an early dinner at the Wilf Fig restaurant at the resort and couldn't be more satisfied. The service was great and the food - everything we had that weekend was delicious! We could tell that fresh ingredients were used too. On the second day, we got up early and decided to hike the shortest trail that led to a waterfall. We were inexperienced hikers, so did not want to overdo it. It's definitely easy for beginners, and they have a few trails like this that lead to diff waterfalls to explore. Once we got to the water it was heavenly. The ice-cold water was actually therapeutic for me and totally rejuvenating for the hike back. We had to leave early the following day, which was a bummer - but the staff were aware of our bus schedule and did everything to make the rest of our stay enjoyable and hassle free. Including getting our bfast order for the following morning beforehand, so they could have it ready. The hotel room on the first night was very cool and airy - didn't miss the AC at all. On the second night the air was a bit more humid, but we managed with the standing fan provided. The beds were heaven, and we had no trouble falling asleep. This was our first visit to Bocawina, but certainly won't be our last! There are so many activities to do here on-site, but they also make arrangements for other fun activities available nearby. Such a gem.

Perfect Honeymoon Location

Reviewed By alwork

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at the Almond Beach Resort at Jaguar Reef and could not have had a better experience. There was a small snafu with our reservation a few days before we were set to arrive, which we later learned was because Prince William and Kate were going to be staying at the resort at the same time as us. Once we learned that was the reason (and had a few sightings of them while we were there!) we realized it was very much out of the resort's control and we still ended up in the original room we wanted. We stayed in one of the private beach front cottages and never wanted to leave! The staff made sure to go above and beyond to apologize for the inconvenience (which ended up not even being an inconvenience) and we were so grateful. Every single staff member at the resort was friendly, helpful, respectful, and made our experience that much better. We loved hanging out with the bartenders at the Big Dock Bar and pool bar. They put so much care into making the drinks delicious and by the third day of the trip, everyone knew us by name and had our favorite drink orders memorized. All the food was delicious, and service at the restaurant was always great. Booking excursions was also a seamless experience, and the staff that took us out for our snorkeling excursion were entertaining and made sure we were comfortable and safe the entire time. The resort is in a great location and across the street from a place where you can rent a golf cart to go explore Hopkins, which has a bunch of cool restaurants and bars with great prices. We could not recommend this resort more and absolutely will be back there one day!

Hotel Stay in Hopkins, Belize

Reviewed By limylat

Spent a week at the Parrot Cove Lodge. Highlights were our staff interactions. We were so impressed by the Front Desk staff (Emma) and our Dining Staff (Leticia & Mike). They always made us feel incredibly welcomed and were prompt at meeting our needs every day. Our room was an average room with 2 queen beds. The AC worked great. The beds were comfortable. Things that were lacking in the room were lights, no bedside lamp, no light at coffee area (had to use cell phone light to make coffee. No hooks to hang towels (bath or beach). No suitcase rack or place to put your suitcase. No dresser or area to unpack except a very small closet for hang up clothes). The food was mediocre and poorly represented on the menu. We didn't receive any information regarding any excursions being offered and had to rely on another hotel to help us find a boat for snorkeling. Unfortunately the beach has massive erosion, large amounts of sargassum (seaweed) and made it almost impossible to access the sea. I believe there are better hotel/resort options for my future stay, many airbnb options to consider as well.

We are directly in the center of Hopkins Village, within walking distance of all restaurants, bars and stores. We have the nicest beach in the village and plenty of chairs and hammocks for sunbathing or relaxing. All of our rooms include nightly A/C, a small fridge, coffee maker with coffee, hot showers, and overlook the sea. We have two-bedroom apartments available for families, and we have beautiful hotel rooms with either a king bed or two queen beds for couples or smaller families. The owners and some of the staff live on-site, and we have nightly security (although Hopkins is an extremely safe and friendly village - you'll love it!)

Wonderful stay

We enjoyed our 4 night stay in this beachfront property, and it is in a good location close to restaurants, bars, and grocery stores. We stayed in a cute cabana with a small fridge and coffee maker. It’s convenient to have coffee first thing in the morning since we have been waking up early. The restaurant doesn’t open for breakfast until 8 am. It is very convenient to have the restaurant on site and we ate our breakfasts there. When we first arrived, the owner Damian was there to greet us. He was very friendly and helpful. The welcome drink was a nice touch. The staff were very nice. Coconut Row owned a tour shuttle and a boat. We had a rental car so we didn’t book an inland tour. We went on the “fish and snorkel” tour. The guide and boat Captain were very patient and helpful. We used their kayak on our last full day and that was a nice experience and the staff helped us get it on the beach. Our only disappointment is the thick sargussum along the beaches. It is not specific to Coconut Row. It is the entire Belize west coast problem. We didn’t realize that it was a big problem when we planned our vacation, and sadly, we didn’t enjoy the Belizean beach experience in San Pedro, Placencia, and Hopkins.

Beaches and Dreams

Beaches and Dreams combines the three elements of beach, food and adventure we believe makes for a great vacation. Every one of our 11 rooms is within 100 feet of the ocean, 8 are ocean-front, and our Sea Bar is the best party on the beach. Our fine-dining restaurant, The Barracuda, has a long culinary history, stemming from the original owner of the resort, chef, Tony Marsico. Finally, our guests can depart for any adventure, from diving and snorkeling to visiting the Maya ruins of Xunanatunich right from our adventure office Amped Coffee and Tours or our busy pier, both located at the resort.

Best vacation ever!

Our vacation with Beaches and Dreams was spectacular, down to every detail. It truly was the perfect vacation. We booked a week long stay in May and enjoyed perfect weather each day. I found Beaches and Dreams on Facebook and I’m so glad that I did! Their resort is all-inclusive, all of our food and drinks were included. And let me tell you about the food…I’m struggling to come up with words to describe how delicious each meal was. No matter what item we tried on the menu, we were blown away by the flavors and the presentation. The Barracuda Restaurant, on the resort’s premises has everything you could ask for in a beachside restaurant, wonderful views of the ocean, soft ocean breezes blowing in, stellar staff that truly understand customer service, out of this world menu items. Each day, each meal, we were presented with some of the most delicious food we’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. One of the perks to an all-inclusive vacation is unlimited drinks and we took full advantage of enjoying the local rums and beers. Anytime we wanted a drink, while lounging in the hammocks or sitting on the lounge chairs beachside, we just had to ask. The staff was so accommodating. I truly was pleased with their attention to detail and generosity. We chose the adventures and tours that we wanted and the staff at Beaches and Dreams did the rest. They emailed our itinerary a week before our arrival and all we had to do was show up at the correct time and off we’d go with our driver/boat captain/guide. We signed up for waterfall repelling. The hike to the top of the waterfall was the most challenging hike I’ve ever completed. Special thanks goes out to our two guides that encouraged me to keep going, one even said, “You don’t want to go home with any regrets, you’re almost there!” He was right. I completed the hike and the repelling and I’m so proud of myself. If I had to award stars to this resort, they would get 10 out of 10 for sure. Everything was just wonderful and I whole-heartedly recommend Beaches and Dreams. Marna Fahrney

3 day stay at Villa Margarita

The view from the 3rd floor is gorgeous . The rooms were more space than my family of 5 needed and it was sparkling clean. From the moment we got left the airport and met our driver/guide (Jonathan), we felt super welcomed. Shanelle was at the front desk when we checked in. She gave us the lay of the land and was very helpful, professional and friendly during our stay. Captain Larry graciously opened coconuts for us to drink on the beach and also made us feel very welcome. Chris and Shakira went above and beyond to help us plan our adventures during our stay. We did snorkeling, ziplining, river tubing and ATV to waterfall. Jamar, along with Captain Mike took us snorkeling. Jamar pointed out all the different corals and he educated us on all the different marine life we saw. We ate breakfast at Jaguar Reef and the food was delicious. Charles, our server, was fantastic. My family loved the stuffed Jacks. Chef Rob’s was great for dinner as well. Definitely make a reservation though. We also ventured into Hopkins for awesome lunch at Ella’s. We borrowed bikes from the resort and stopped at the grocery store and gift shops along the way. The Dock Bar was a total blast too. Bartenders were great and we enjoyed swinging into the ocean from the rope swing. The day beds were pretty sweet too. We never saw a manatee but I heard from other guests that they spotted them. Belize is a beautiful place for vacation adventures and the people we met along the way just made it even better.
