I recommend you take the time to take the one-hour tour around this ancient and historical church with it’s 53m high bell tower constructed in the early 12th century), whilst in St. Émilion. Led by our knowledgeable Lydie, we explored the catacombs beneath and then through to the huge Church. It was listed as a world heritage site in 1999 by UNESCO.

The bell tower is the highest landmark in St Emillion and from its top you get to enjoy fab 360-degree views of the town and surrounding countryside. It is a bit of a slog - up a narrow flight of some 200 steps - but if find yourself getting out of breath there are a couple of levels along the way at which you can have a rest. And the views from the lower levels of the tower are pretty impressive too. Cost is a reasonable €2 per person and you pay at the tourist office.

A nice Lavoir, well kept, that seeps history. You can sit in the restaurant next door, and soak in historic days gone by. Well worth a visit.

Along with the production of excellent wine, Bordeaux makes a beautiful “crémant” so lovely place to visit and learn how it’s made and get a sense of the History of the village too. Beautifully restored with sensitivity too. The wine was splendid and the tasting at the end of the visit welcome
