This theatre is an hour away for me but worth the drive. The wide variety of performers means there's a show for everyone. The theatre is small and every seat is great. The staff are friendly and helpful. The Music Hall is surrounded by a lot of restaurants if you want to grab a bite before the show. Parking is decent. There are some lots surrounding the Hall and street parking is free after 6PM Monday through Saturday.

Our family has been attending The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival faithfully for the last 10 years, and consider it hands-down one of the very best experiences of the Hudson Valley. Every summer, they stage a handful of Shakespeare's plays as well as one or two works by someone else. If you can't imagine sitting through a Shakespeare play, than this is for you! One of the charms of HVSC is that they do NOT stage a dry, dull production, but one that is engaging, often remarkably silly, often playful, always creative. They don't take themselves too seriously (unless it's a tragedy), and that makes for a relaxing, enjoyable evening. Period costumes are frequently eschewed in favor of contemporary, and sets are minimal and the audience's imagination is engaged. We began bringing our kids at 5 years old, and have enjoyed everything from A Bombity of Errors (Hip-hop Shakespeare, anyone?), to Around the World in 80 Days with an elephant made of flex duct, to by far the best directed, best acted, most gripping Hamlet I've ever seen. But the play is only a part of the experience, because the setting at Boscobel is spectacular. Come early enough for a picnic and glass of wine on the lawn overlooking the Hudson River and watch the sun set from your seat under the tent as the actors dance, march or run in from the horizon to begin the show. At intermission, simply walk across the stage under the intimate-feeling tent and out onto the lawn to watch the stars come out over the river.
