9 Museums in Nungambakkam That You Shouldn't Miss

July 30, 2021 Marissa Gamble

The diverse population of Chennai (Madras) is reflected in its rich cultural scene. You’ll find serious theatre as well as the glitz and glamour of Kollywood. Chennai is also an important center for the Bharatanatyam, a local form of classical dance. Visit in January, for the festival of Pongal, or in April, when Chennai celebrates its new year.

National Art Gallery

Tenth century paintings, religious statues and relics occupy one building while the other contains mostly modern works.

A somewhat confusing place if you didn't have a guide to direct you. Several galleries, the most fascinating of which was the Bronze Statue Gallery. Interesting to see the same deities interpreted from different ages. Photography is limited in some areas which is disappointing.

Government Museum

This majestic complex comprises six buildings and nearly fifty galleries; the impressive works cross every era and branch of science and art, from zoology and anthropology to puppetry, painting and fibre optic sculpture.

I am an art lover and how come someone skip the Chola bronzes and you get to see some of the most exquisite pieces of that period. Dancing Nataraja, Kalyansunder, different saints, deity etc all casted painstakingly in bronze. Its just in the centre of city.
