Toledo (Stazione della Metropolitana dell'Arte)

The 11 Art Stations along Line 1 of the underground in Naples, managed by ANM, are the result of a project by the municipal administration in Naples. They are one of the most interesting examples of decentralized museum spread over the urban area: more than 150 site-specific works of art by 80 protagonists of contemporary art have been placed inside and outside the stations. Metro Art ANM’s educational service promotes this rich heritage of art and architecture: guided tours, school activities, workshops for children, private tours.

Really the most beautiful metro in Europe! The Toledo station, also awarded by the world press for the spectacular architecture and works of art, is now among the symbolic places of contemporary Naples. On the first basement are the remains of the walls of the Aragonese age, found during the excavation works. The great mosaics of William Kentridge, the Olas in relief by Oscar Tusquets, the light boxes "of the sea" by Robert Wilson and a photographic intervention by Achlle Cevoli are the artistic installations of the station. The colors of the coverings change as you go deeper: from black you go to warm and golden tones, up to the blue mosaics, which indicate the descent below sea level. Thus we arrive at the monumental underground hall, dominated by the charm of the Crater de luz, the large cone that crosses all levels of the station, inside which is a suggestive play of LED lights programmed by Robert Wilson. It is possible to visit Toledo, together with the other stations of the Art of the metro of Naples, also with educational tours by appointment by the art historians of the Neapolitan company Mobility.

We had completed the Best of Naples walking tour and told by the tour guide that we should catch the funicular. So that is what we decided to do. Easier said than done. The entrances are tucked away in one of fbe many narrow streets vut well worth hunting out. There are two funicular’s which will take you up to Castel Sant Elmo and also the amazing views over the city of Naples and its bay. There is a definite drop in temperature up here. The ride one way is a reasonable €1.10 and would highly recommend the journey only takes about 5 minutes

This was a treat and thankfully our group was part of the Holland America cruise ship excursion so our guide already had the tickets for us and we ended up ahead of the line, great views on our way up and down, easy on and off and the ride was smooth,

Circumvesuviana Railway Service

Reviewed By sstangel - Sheboygan, United States

Have used The Circumvesuviana Train in the past and it has not changed nor disappointed me. Looks awful/ full of graffiti on the outside but is clean and is a comfortable ride. Cost to Pompeii is 5.6 E, 1 way, purchased at a Tabacchi shop in the Napoli Centrale station. The stop for Pompei is “Pompei Scavi Villa Misteri” and trains run about every 30 min from The Circumvesuviana Garibaldi Station in the lower section of Napoli Centrale....just follow the signs. We had our luggage with us as we were headed for Sorrento for 3 days and on a 2week vacation in Italy. No problem with luggage on the train and we were able to use the “Luggage Storage” for free at The “Porta Marina” Gate to the ruins, not far from the train depot. It seemed quite secure with a guard posted in the room. Entrance fee to Pompei was 15 Euros. We then purchased our Circumvesuviana ticket for the next leg of the journey from Pompei to Sorrento.... cost was 5.8 Euros. A 3 day Campania Artecard can also be purchased instead for 32 E ( Ordinary fare) or 25 E ( ages 18 to 25) in the Tabacchi shop which includes travel on The Circumvesuviana Train plus other Unico Campania transport and entry fees to Pompei( 15 E) and many other museums, etc.
