Archeology, fine arts and ethnology museum. Important collection of Phoenician World and Murillo, Zurbarán, Rubens, Zuloaga, Sorolla, Miró... paintings
This museum has a very interesting archaeological section with finds from all periods showing that the region around Cádiz was inhabited from Neolithic times on, making Cádiz the oldest, permanently inhabited city of Europe. Especially the unique Phoenician finds are worth seeing including two marble anthropoid sarcophaguses. On the first floor is the fine art collection with a room dedicated to the Spanish painter Zurbarán and another to Murillo. For everybody interested in ancient culture and art, this museum should not be missed.

**Temporarily Closed** CLOSED TO NEW NOTICE DUE TO MAINTENANCE WORK Archaeological site named Gadir. During the visit you will do a tour where you will be able to see the evolution of the city from its founding by the Phoenicians to Roman times. Right 21st century, an interactive multimedia tour will allow you to see the remains of the ancient Phoenician city built in the 9th century BC, with its dwellings, its streets, its animals, etc.
My husband and I both found this site fascinating. We showed up at the box office around 11:30 and got free tickets for the one o’clock tour. Our guide spoke both Spanish and English and after the introductory film (subtitled in English) we were free to walk around the clearly described remains of Phoenician homes and streets. Our guide asked if we had any questions and spent a good half hour explaining things to us. She was very knowledgeable and we felt lucky to have her to ourselves. If you’re interested in history this is definitely worth seeking out.

The Museo de Chiclana offers visitors a thematic route, designed as a journey through time, an overall view of the evolution of the city from its prehistoric settlements to the town we know today. Each segment is based on a selection of works typifying a historic period, an artistic movement, or a particular theme. The itinerary can be taken online (a general overview) and gives an approximation of what you will find during the visit to our museum.
