Beautiful location along the St. Lawrence River. The nature displays work on all age levels - kids to adults. Staff are very visible, knowledgeable, and easy to interact with. Didn't do all the many trails out to and along the river as I didn't allow enough time (next time for sure) - spent way more time inside than I thought I would. Spent a lot of time with an interactive audio book of hundreds of birds and their songs - pick a bird, enter the bird's index number, and you hear the bird. Though I went in the Fall, there are activities all year, including snow-shoeing on the trails in Winter. Allow at least an hour inside and if hiking the trails is your option, you could spend 3+ hours easily.

TAUNY is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to showcasing the folk culture and living traditions of the North Country. The TAUNY Center houses a gallery with changing exhibits and the North Country Folkstore, which features locally made items from artists and producers around the region. TAUNY offers ongoing programs, demonstrations, and workshops to help visitors appreciate the region’s folklife and culture.
Believe that crafts people and artisans are people of the past? They are certainly not at THE TAUNY CENTER. Spend more time than you anticipated looking at the diversity of excellence in woodworking, quilts, and pottery. Kathy and Lois will be pleased to answers questions about any of the items for sale and to share TAUNY's remarkable history. Thanks particularly to Varick Chittenden, St. Lawrence University 1963, the founder of this specual place from classmate John McClenahen.

Stone Valley Trail is simply one of the best hiking trails in the North Country. You can hike on either side of the river and enjoy the beauty of the waterfalls and vistas of the rushing river, particularly in the spring. At any time of year, yes including winter when you can access on snowshoes, there are beautiful surprises. The autumn with the colorful foliage is also one of my favorite times to take a hike. You can choose to go from either the south end or the north end or make a round trip for a healthy day hike. Take a camera, good hiking shoes (or snowshoes in winter), some snacks and water, or a hearty lunch. There are lovely places to sit beside the river and just relax, listen to the water, the wind and open your eyes to take in the power and beauty of the Racquette River.
