9 Farms in Isle of Wight That You Shouldn't Miss

March 28, 2022 Lean Nau

The Isle of Wight is the perfect place to enjoy some peace, quiet and natural beauty. Except perhaps in the summer, when the Isle of Wight Festival draws visitors from all over the world. In 1970, the Festival was the largest rock-music event ever held. It was called Britain's Woodstock and featured Jimi Hendrix and The Who. (Not so much peace or quiet that week.) The island is also known for its world-famous sailing and lovely resorts, where people have been vacationing since Victorian times.

West Wight Alpacas

We are an open farm park where you can trek with alpacas and llamas and see all sorts of other farm animals. We have an excellent on farm cafe/bistro and are open seven days a week.

Fantastic day out, we went to the Isle of Wight in December not realising every single attraction would be closed! Luckily we stumbled across this fantastic farm with a pleasant little cafe and shop, we interacted with all of the animals and fed them, after a quick drink and home-made cake at the cafe we had our alpaca walk which was muddy but fun! Our hosts were fantastic and I came away with endless knowledge about this animal, we even finished the day purchasing a beautiful pair of alpaca socks from the shop, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this place, it saved us from having a very empty day!

Tapnell Farm Park

Tapnell Farm Park is an award winning, all-weather family attraction on the Isle of Wight. Formerly one of the Isle of Wight's largest dairy farms, Tapnell Farm Park now plays host to a whole range of animals, including Wallabies, Meerkats, Donkeys, Goats and more! It also has loads of indoor and outdoor activities for families, including a large Play Barn, Jumping Pillow, Pedal Go Karts, and a Straw Bale Adventure Barn.

We live on the island and had never ventured down to Tapnell. Having some family here we decided to finally check it out. I was anticipating your average farm but it was so much more than that. From the indoor play barn suitable for all ages, with zip lines, trampolines, climbing walls, slides and go karts to all the wonderful animals you can pet (we saw pigs, goats, guinea pigs, rabbits, aplacas, wallabies & meerkats). Then you have the brilliant outdoor play area with the bouncing pillows! My 4 year old spent ages on the pillows and absolutely loved it and since we left has asked daily if we can go back! We went during the “covid” period so the indoor play barn was shut but that didn’t bother us, they’re currently doing online booking only and it’s for 3 hour slots in morning or afternoon, I found that plenty of time as after 3 hours I was exhausted! I would absolutely recommend this place if you’re visiting the island or even if you live here like us!

Briddlesford Lodge Farm Shop

A treasure trove of the best Isle of Wight produce. Including the award winning milk, cream and cheese made on the farm, it also has a fantastic meat counter with Isle of Wight beef and lamb, also look out for the highly sort after rose veal. Friendly staff can guide you through the extensive produce. There is access to the hop kilns heritage centre which takes a look at the history of the farm from 1923 to the present day!

Briddlesford farm shop has three main buildings, a restaurant/cafe with live music events, a farm shop with a wide variety of local produce, plants, household goods, gifts, and there is also a heritage building with information on the history of the local farm, it's a good environment to sit and chill or to help your kiddos with farm-related school projects. Along with farmyards and private cottages. There is also a barn where the young Guernsey calves are kept in the warm, they are adorable, friendly and there are educational signs located to teach your more about farming. It is a really nice location to sit and have food and drink with friends or family. There are also music events held here. There are longer walks close by as well as an antique shop a short drive down the main road. I personally live local and so shop frequently for the local hospitality, I generally buy my Guernsey milk, my scones, vegetarian pies and have a good chat with the staff who are all friendly and great.

We popped in on our way back to the ferry port after a scorching week of camping, and were delighted to be greeted by the lovely goats who were happy for us to say hello and take their picture. They’re obviously very used to meeting people! Inside we found the fudge that we’d heard so much about, as well as some great cheeses. We bought some of both (we’re trying to be good and make the fudge last, but our willpower isn’t that strong) and can testify that their reputation is well warranted - it’s all delicious! Would have liked to have stopped for a cup of tea and some cake but we were short of time, so we’ll definitely have to come back. Had a nice chat with the owner who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and picked up some great tips on kefir. Worth another visit!
