Agiou Markou Square

Now,this I consider the most tradtional, old and attractive Square in Zakynthos Town! All special festivities take place every so often once that it's connected to Solomos Square. It's a meeting point for strolling, having a coffee break, having lunch or dinner, visiting tourist shops and a special attraction is the Solomos and Kalvos Mausoleum in which the graves of our National Poet Dionysios Solomos and our other famous poet Kalvos and his englsih wife exist. The Museum is full of paintings, statues, works of eminent mayors and ministers, poets and painters are kept. The lovely Catholic Church adds to the traditional touch of the Square. This is where the Revolution took place in 1628 against the Venetian Nobility who used to take advantage of lower classes. The stonework on the ground takes you back to a lost era!I just love St.Marcus' Square representing the old traditional Zakynthos as it existed before the 1953 earthquakes destroyed the island!Do visit it,it's worth it!There are people everywhere drinking, relaxing, enjoying music, shopping, chatting, walking around, enjoying a friendly local lifestyle!

KTEL Zakynthou - Public Bus

Reviewed By Q6006UBmichaelt - Leicester, United Kingdom

We travelled on every one the bus routes in the Summer 2019 timetable, and were very impressed. Punctuality on leaving the Central Bus station was exact. Outside the bus station, through Zakynthos town itself and through the villages on the island delays were incurred, but always as a result of slow-moving traffic (including goats), inappropriately parked cars, and oncoming oversized coaches - but this is Greece, after all. Three points: the Central Bus station, though described in guide books as 2 km from town by road, is just 150m from the town centre by a rather steep but well-marked path. Also the route of the return journey from the outer destination is not always the same as the outbound journey. And the timetable changes markedly outside tourist high season - but you can find the timetables on their website. It is indicated on the bus stops, though the times given on the bus stops are times for the beginning of the service and not the actual arrival time of the bus. I found that all the bus drivers (and the conductors on one or two of the busier services) were helpful and polite, (which is more than I can say, alas, for some of the passengers...)
