9 Bodies of Water in KwaZulu-Natal That You Shouldn't Miss

September 9, 2021 Janette Largent

KwaZulu-Natal (/kwɑːˌzuːluː nəˈtɑːl/; also referred to as KZN and known as "the garden province") is a province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged. It is located in the southeast of the country, enjoying a long shoreline beside the Indian Ocean and sharing borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg and its largest city is Durban. It is the 2nd most populous province in South Africa, with slightly fewer residents than Gauteng.

Saint Lucia Estuary

This estuary is part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park and includes fishing, hiking tours, boat tours and a crocodile center. The crocodiles make swimming an ill-advised idea.

We booked on the hippo croc cruise boat at around Mid Day , which was recommended to us as hippos are usually waking up from their sleep around this time. We saw a lot of hippos and only 2 crocodiles and a rare sighting of Hammer bird and then a green falcon which is the fastest bird or animal on earth I believe . True magic! Only irritation was the rude tour guide from a French group of tourists , he was rather rude to other people not included on his tour. Making it unpleasant for others.

Sodwana Bay

One of the best beaches I’ve been on. You can drive onto the beach at certain times. Long stretches of Sandy beach, beautiful waves, swim where you want. Snorkel in the rock pools, diving and fishing charters available. Bring your food with you as shopping very limited. Discovered a very nice little spa and coffee shop at one of the diving companies. Me and my 6 year old granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed a aromatherapy massage. Will I go back to Sodwana.......anytime for sure
