9 Bodies of Water in Auckland That You Shouldn't Miss

March 9, 2022 Velvet Mowry

The Māori call Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau — a maiden desired by 100 lovers, and a valuable territory fought over for centuries for its fertile land and natural harbors on the Pacific Ocean (to the east) and Tasman Sea (to the west). Today, it’s New Zealand’s largest city: A vibrant and diverse place where nature and urban life go hand-in- hand, with 48 volcanic cones, more than 50 islands, and 29,000 km of coastline and beaches just minutes away from the arts and shopping of the central city.

Devonport

This place has everything - sensational views of Auckland harbour and Auckland city, history with the tunnels and museum on Mount Victoria and North Head, excercise as you walk around Mt Victoria and the Devonport shopping area - oh! Did I say 'shopping'? There are some lovely tourist and local shops and lots of cafe's and restaurants to eat at. Also this is a short ferry ride from central downtown Auckland so you get a nice boat ride at the same time. My children love going to North Head (they're in their teens now and we've been going there since they were toddlers). Just North Head itself is a great outing - they love wandering through the old war tunnels and sliding down the grassy slopes on a bit of cardboard. A really great, relaxing, fun day out doors.

Lake Wainamu

Reviewed By AllieEagle

As a local these are my observations: If you are arriving by car, organize your time to be prepared to look for a car park on busy weekends or holidays. There are no shops or petrol stations here. . There are two car parks you can use to go to Wainamu, one to the right of the one-lane bridge and one to the left. Park considerately. You may need to drive right down to the beach and walk back up. Parking clumisly on the roadside is not helpful. our roads are narrow and emergency vehicles need to get through. April has been a busy time so far., there are limited car-parks at the entrance way to the Lake walk-way. . Toilets only at the beach. And occassional portaloos at the car parks. There is no cell phone coverage it is a good idea to clearly make a designated meeting point for friends if you are travelling in seperate vehicles. Sports people need to know what the by-laws are for using Auckland Parks. (Especially in the area of noise and allowable numbers visiting). The Lake has become a popular place for swimming and sand dune activity so it is important that visitors think about how their sound travels. a lot of people are" coming to nature" not wanting extra urban sound. People are still littering a lot up at the lake. Please take everything with you. baby wipes. tins and glass. This "best kept secret" is out now but sadly it is being treated badly by some visitors. Please be tidy kiwis! Lets keep Wainamu pristine. Be in nature, be welcome, care for the area. Be safe!

I like Lake Pupuke, it is a good spot to watch the birds! Also great if you are a photographer and want to get some good shots of the birdlife. I really liked the Pekin and Muscovy ducks but sadly the Pekin ducks have passed way and I do not know what happened to the Muscovies. I really hope they come back! It is a great place to visit on a sunny day.

Lake Maygrove

Reviewed By TerryRT - Auckland, New Zealand

We now live within walking distance and go there often. What a colourful setting and so easy to walk or amble around, with various entrances and exits to choose from ! Plus there is no entrance fee to pay ! The ducks and fish and eels all live with the colourful lilies growing peacefully on the surface of the ponds. The peace and calm from just being in the area is quite amazing. We take our visitors there and they are all charmed at the setting and how close they are to our home,
