The City Museum of Ljubljana records, collects, documents, evaluates, preserves, interprets, researches, and presents the material and immaterial heritage from the area of Ljubljana and the city's wider surrounding area, dating from Prehistory to the present day. With the merger of the City Museum of Ljubljana and the City Art Gallery of Ljubljana in 2009 into the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, the city's largest cultural institution, the museum became part of the living and current museum-gallery offering in the capital. We maintain genuine contact with our local and foreign visitors, our exhibitions and events serve to popularise collections, and we encourage dialogue between heritage, art, and the challenges of contemporary society.
Ljubljana can be quite rainy sometimes that's why visiting museums is always a good idea. This museum is located in the center of Ljubljana and you get quite a lot of information about the history of Ljubljana and Slovenia as well when walking through exhibitions. They also have special exhibitions that are worth a look as well. Make sure to check out the coffee shop in the basement when you finish with museum because it's one of the best in Ljubljana
On the slopes above the Lipnica valley the ruins of Lipnica Castle offer views across green hills to the Julian Alps. Lipnica caste (Pusti grad) lies on the edge of woodland and offers wonderful views of the surrounding green hills and further to Bled and the Julian Alps with Mt. Triglav. On the other side the views extend across the green forests of the Lipnica valley and the Jelovica plateau.
Kamnik's Old Castle is one of the oldest castles in Gorenjska. It was placed high above the city and well fortified with a defensive wall. The extraordinary location at the dominant point enabled its owners to control the traffic routes leading from Styria through the Tuhinj valley past Kamnik to Gorenjska and Primorska. The ruins of the castle on the top of Krniska gora are poorly preserved.
