The Eastern Cape is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are Port Elizabeth and East London. It was formed in 1994 out of the Xhosa homelands of Transkei and Ciskei, together with the eastern portion of the Cape Province. Landing place and home of the 1820 settlers, the central and eastern part of the province is the traditional home of the Xhosa people.

There are only 19 places in the world where water falls straight into the ocean. Waterfall Bluff is one of them. Two more are within a hike of here. How to describe this place? It almost feels like a spiritual journey- it's so beautiful. Even a year later, it brings a smile to my face. The best way to get here, involves a 14K hike, but you will hardly notice. The hike goes through the most pristine beaches in the world, with soft sand and clear waters, gentle undulating hills and fords a couple of streams. The ocean is visible most of the way, and with some luck you will see tons of dolphins from shore. This part of the world is very sparsely populated, but we came across one or two villagers and school kids. Do take your time to stop and take in the views from the hills. Behind you, the african savanna spreading as far as the eye can see, stopping dramatically in steep sea side cliffs. The birds sing. A cow moos. The hardest question you will face today is where to have lunch. Will you stop by the small streams, go for a dip and bath in the rocks? Or will you wait for the natural caves around Waterfall Bluff, and eat while listening to the waves bellow, cooled by the soft mist of the waterfall? Maybe you will snack on the way back. Scoot over to the cliff edge and let your feet dangle looking out to Cathedral rock, and the dolphins bellow. To get here, I drove up from Mthatha to Mbotyi. I left my car at Dingezwene Backpackers Village (+27 (71) 253-4469), where the sole owner a motherly woman called Ma Pumla, was simply wonderful. My visit would not have been possibly without Chickoya Sisanda's (+27 (83) 874-9857) help. Chickoya knows the unmarked cattle tracks that make up the path from Mbotyi to Waterfall Bluff and is well known around here which is important for safety. Above all, he is a warm human being, incredibly knowledgeable about the species of birds, snakes, fish and trees, as well as the history of the area and the people. It really was a blessing to share lunch with such a wonderful human being in such a beautiful place.
