Once a frontier mining town, Durango draws thousands of tourists year-round for the myriad outdoor recreational activities and scenic beauty. Mountain bikers, rafters, kayakers, horseback riders, rock climbers, hikers, campers, hunters and fishermen are drawn to the two-million acre San Juan National Forest and to the San Juan mountains, the largest range in the Rockies. But the city's biggest tourist draw is a nine-hour historic train ride in a vintage steam locomotive. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which hauled precious metals in the 1880s, now takes tourists for a 47-mile, open-air journey through mountains and forests and past abandoned mines to historic Silverton and back. Children and train buffs will relish the chance to climb into a locomotive and pore over railroad memorabilia at the railroad's museum. Skiers flock to the Durango Mountain Resort in winter, which also offers hiking, fishing, rafting and horseback riding in warmer months. Slow down your pace with a stroll past splendidly restored Victorian buildings in historic Downtown Durango and wind up a very active weekend in a local brewpub or saloon.

Whatever you do - STAY AWAY! I arrived Thursday to check-in and from the moment I entered the drive way I had a bad feeling. The photos that are online are a complete lie. This place is run down and disgusting. But I had a reservation and I was coming off a long drive so I wanted to give this place the benefit of a doubt. Maybe the room would be nice - WRONG! When my husband and I went inside to ask if we could check-in early (we arrived in town at 1:45pm). The woman at the desk (the only redeeming this about this place) said she would check. As she was getting ready to see if our room was ready the man working at the computer next to her jumped up and said "I need to check something first. Besides they're early." He got on her computer and proceeded to click around for 10 minutes while the rest of us stood there awkwardly. When he was finally done the woman proceeded to check us in. Once I gave her my credit card she informed me that there would be an $85 hold placed on the card for incidentals. I'm sorry what?? I've been on the road for 10 days throughout the Southwest and no one has done that. She asks if she can place the hold to which I responded "I guess so" since I felt like there was nothing else I could do. Once she had my money locked in she gave me the normal paperwork to sign. She made sure to remind me that there would be a fee charged if my husband or I smoked anything of any kind in the room. Now I was annoyed. I don't smoke (if you do that's fine!) but she pretty much made me feel like she thought I planned to start a cigar lounge in her hotel. Then she proceeded to tell her where should park my car. This was not a recommendation this was her telling me which parking space was my assigned space. Weird. Not bad necessarily but weird. We head up to our room - a King Suite apparently - on the second floor. The room is directly over the lobby and on our way there I pass thru a cloud of marijuana smoke from somewhere. Nice. Again I don't care if you smoke but I have a feeling that these people make a habit of collecting on that no smoking deposit here. Our room is at the end of the hall. Outside our door is a broom and dustpan FULL OF CIGARETTE BUTTS. I can't make this up! To get into the room you open the door and step down. WTF. The room is plain and weirdly laid out. Shabby and not like the photos online. I went thru the room checking it out like I do at every place I stay. I stepped into the bathroom and lost it. There were "particles" floating in the toilet and there was a ring around the bowl. So someone took a sh*t in there and left something behind and housekeeping didn't think to clean???? The shower had this hard white crystallized crap in the bottom of the tub. Not idea what it was. Hubby thought it might be ice but after testing it with his pocket knife determined it wasn't. DISGUSTING. Under the sink was a lump of red...something. And the sinks had white junk in them as well. So we headed downstairs and told the woman at the desk we wouldn't be staying and described the HORROR of the room upstairs. She was genuinely surprised and said she hadn't checked after housekeeping had been thru. I'm sorry - that was AFTER someone cleaned?? She offered us another room which I declined and we left. She was nice but not nice enough to make up for that. Two hours later I get an email saying that the $85 hold will be released in the next day or so BUT I will be charged for the room since it was a late cancellation. F*ck that. I am waiting to hear back from the manager but there is no way I am paying for that room. Do yourself and your family a favor and stay far away from this place. Just down the road is the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn. Same (or lower) price and clean room.

I've been staying at this little family-owned motel for 20 years!! Squeaky clean, good beds, neat western decor--Our room even had a couple of nice recliners!! Way nicer for watching TV than lying on a bed--If you prefer a huge room, with a huge price, and indifferent staff, go to one of the big box hotels--Here, you're dealing with the (long time) owners, who want you to have a nice stay, and want you to return--Reasonably priced food and clean accommodations are in short supply in Durango--The Siesta is an exception--

I can find two positives to say about the Caboose Motel: it's cheap and it's clean. After that, it's all downhill. The rooms are small, and as other reviewers have noted, the mattresses are like sleeping on a plywood board. No one is ever in the closed office - you have to call to get them. Reservations are a mystery to them. For stays over a night, there is no service, which means no made beds, no fresh towels, no trash emptied. That's all the guest's responsibility. Here's the worst part - the walls are paper thin. You can clearly hear every conversation, cough, etc. from the rooms next door. It's like you're sharing a room with strangers. There are so many other reasonably priced hotels and motels nearby, there's no reason to ever stay here.

Tv and phone did not work. Toilet could barely flush a Kleenex. Small, poorly marked parking lot with no handicap parking. Breakfast consisted of toast, two choices of cereal, and packages of oatmeal .

See why we were voted "Best Lodging Value in Durango" for the 5th Year! We are located in the heart of downtown Durango, Colorado. Seasonal hot tub
Booked a King-sized bed room through Hotels.com. When we arrived we were given two keys, neither of which worked to a room immediately above the office. When we got a key that worked, the door to the room did not open because it hit the bed, which was a full (smaller than queen, much smaller than king). Room so small that we could not believe they were actually renting it. Compared to the confirmation email picture of our room, it was the difference between a penthouse suite and where Oliver Twist lived. We spoke the the clerk who said that the owner had overbooked, ran out of king bed rooms and just booked us in that room, which is the last to be booked. He indicated that it was a really bad room and had encouraged the owner not to rent it anymore, because like us, almost everyone who was given that room hated it. They offered us a room at the Comfort Inn (owned by same person) but still could not provide a king size bed. It involved being five blocks further from downtown restaurant where we wanted to walk. Meant taking an uber and a long walk back. See review of Comfort Inn.

72 Room economy hotel/motel in beautiful Durango, Colorado. We represent new ownership and management as of May 2017. We are systematically improving the property and the rooms daily. We believe one of the best features at our property is the waterfront feature of being on Junction Creek and having direct access to the Animas River Trail, Rank Park and the river. When you stay with us, you must take the 2 minute stroll!
I'm not sure what reviews I saw that prompted me to book at this motel. On driving in, I got a bad feeling looking at the exterior. I checked in, and loaded my stuff into the room. Room is super beat up, and I can hear the faucet turning and water running from the room on the other side of the wall. I try to take a shower, and no hot water. It looks like some people are living there on a full time basis. I have never in my life bailed out of a motel before, but I asked for my money back and went to a different place. The clerk was cool, and as far as I know my room was refunded.
