We stayed for 3 nights during a recent tour of Chiapas. It is quaint, has old world charm and is very quiet. As mentioned, the rooms are all different with antiques. Food and drinks are good and the staff is friendly. The grounds are beautiful. We did not see the museum as it was locked the whole time we were there. Cons; - beds are very firm, bathroom is old and rooms smell musty - office and kitchen/ bar are closed at 8 pm. There is no coffee in the room and none available until between 8-9 am.. Although breakfast was supposed to start at 8, we didn’t see staff nor were able to order food until 9. This was a problem with tours, early risers and checking out - lighting is very dim - hot tub not working and no chairs around the pool - you are very isolated and there are no locks on the rooms. There is nothing nearby for restaurants. You are out in the country. Definitely not the place to stay if you need night life Some people will really love the ambience as mentioned by another reviewer and some will miss the conveniences. There are no TVs. Regardless, its a unique and interesting place to stay !

When we had to decide where to stay in Tziscao we had actually only one important requirement - access to a kitchen. We asked various places and Junkolal offered a communal kitchen. The location and the huts looked decent, the price normal for the days around New Years Eve. We arrived and were not very happy with how everything looked. The kitchen was the actual kitchen of their family restaurant. The staff or better the family made the impression that they don't like us in their kitchen. They barely greeted us and we felt not very welcomed, although we cooked only in times the restaurant wasn't busy and we cleaned everything carefully. In addition it was quite a dirty kitchen. The cabañas themselves were OK, although they need maintenance, e.g. concrete stairs have cracks and no hand rails (photos online are outdated), paint came off, the wooden terrace fence was broken, etc. We also experienced mice in the night and the huts have literally no insulation. You hear even the smallest whisper and whatever noise your neighbors are making. When we asked if we could make a small bonfire for New Years Eve at their designated fire place, they refused friendly. Although the day before another couple made a fire, at NYE a large Christian group occupied the whole garden and made a fire too. And on our last day another family made a fire too. We can't help but feeling discriminated. Last things - their property does not look very good taken care off. Garbage around. They call themselves AgroEcoTurism but you actually don't see any of that. No explanation what their objective is, in what projects they are involved. In our opinion it is just a greenwashing name. And we fell for it. We decided to pay 100 MXN per night more than in another place, because we wanted to support their eco place. AND to finish that chapter they also charged us for the gas we used in their kitchen. Well, they did not tell us before. And we were very economical with the gas usage and probably paid them way to much for it. Overall, a not so nice experience to finish the old year and start the new one. Could have been such an amazing experience with an incredible landscape, but the family owning that place didn't do anything to make this place a place we recommend nor would ever come back to.

We stayed in their cabin with a balcony (and hammock!) overlooking the lake. The cabin is rustic/rudimentary, but spacious and clean and excellent value for the low price. Hector and Yolanda, who own and run the Cabañas are very friendly. The Cabañas also include a simple restaurant with home style cooking. Hector's brother, Roque, is a guide to the region who has lived and worked in the United States and is fluent in English (his mobile number is 963-663-35-17; landline is 00-502-30-04-70-97 - the mobile number is a Guatemalan number because there is no Mexican cell service in the area). You can also arrange to have Roque as your guide through the Cabañas.
