Enchanting!

The Mingshi Mountain Villa was the perfect setting for pondering the remarkable experience we had just had at the nearby Detian Waterfall (a must-see). This resort is nestled among the remarkable limestone karst mountains of the Guangxi province, and is set along a peaceful river. The day we arrived was misty which made the mountains look mysterious. Local dancers were performing an indigenous dance in a pavilion set across the water from the lobby and open-air dining room where we came in. The effect was magical. We dropped our bags in our room and took an evening walk around the whole vast facility as the sun was setting. They have many amenities (e.g. pool, hot tub, archery, a cultural display, bamboo river rafts, giant bamboo water wheels, a very large adult-sized swing, open air dining overlooking the lake, front porch on all the apartments with views of the cliffs and mountains etc.). The bed was comfortable and the room was tastefully decorated. Curiously they had plumbed the bathroom sink without a S-shaped pea-trap so the bathroom smelled. The solution was simply to plug the sink when we weren’t using it. The staff was friendly. We were the ONLY westerners there, so we used our translation apps most of the time, but there were a couple of young men who spoke some English. We relaxed the next day (checkout was at noon) until it was time for our driver to take us to the Nanning airport (about a 3 hour drive). My wife said that this is one of her two top mountain resorts in the world. Check it out!

Fair hotel close to the waterfalls

This hotel is in a great location very close to Detian Waterfalls. The reception staff don't speak any English so you may need some help or download google translate before you come. The hotel is shaped like an S and the rooms have an akward shape because of that. The rooms are reasonably sized and fairly equipped with TV kettle, robes, slippers, toiletries and a very fast wireless internet. The beds were firm and fairly comfortable but I did find a bit inconvenient that they didn't supply a stand for suitcases. The bathroom is well equipped although I was quite intrigued by the plastic sheet that they provide with the wooden bath... is it for you to put over the bath? Does it mean that they don't clean it? I didn't use it, just in case... I was also quite intrigued by the toilet and the shower sharing the same cubicle, this meant that the whole space would be flooded for hours and you would get soaked feet every time you wanted to use the toilet... very strange. The hotel provides these complimentary baskets covered with cling film containing fruit and durian biscuits... my daughter opened one of them and we were unable to get rid of the smell in the two days we were there. I don't recommend you open the durian biscuits unless you are planning to eat them, and better do it in the balcony, if you are new to durian, the smell is quite a thing, you've been warned. The hotel has very nice grounds with lots of outdoor seating, there are very nicely landscaped gardens, we really enjoyed walking around and I imagine it must be a lovely place to go to in the summer. The hotel has a restaurant in the grounds however, they don't allow meals to be added to your hotel bill which makes me think that they may belong to different people. The menu is in Chinese but it has some south east Asian dishes which is nice if you are fed up with Chinese. There is a waitress who speaks some English but probably not enough to translate the menu for you. I recommend Google Translate (again) for the menu, if you can manage to make sense of the senseless translations, you might be able to get something edible, thread carefully, though, there are insects in the menu! The food was ok, big portions but a bit oily and we managed not to order any worms! Breakfast was pretty bad, there was no proper coffee, just this warm coffee, milk and sugar concoction coming out of a dispenser. There were pork and plain buns but they were a bit stiff and had a funny fishy taste, they had been cooked in a glass steamer as opposed to wicker baskets, that may have been be the reason. Apart from that, some fluffy sponge cake and some dragon fruit, the rest was all greasy stuff and rice congee. I should have bought some fruit the day before, I found the stuff they served pretty inedible. Other than the horrid breakfast, the flooded bathroom and the stinky durian biscuits, everything else was ok. The hotel was a bit overpriced in my opinion, we paid about 1000rmb per room per night a bit much considering that it is in the middle of nowhere, but I guess it is all down to supply and demand and there may not be many other places around.

Mingshi Mountain Villa

A Taste of Chinese County

The stay in this Hotel is very unique. The room is traditional Chinese village style, it is clean and comfortable. Perhaps, the lighter side of it, is bugs and mosquitoes. The location and setting is superb, the scenery is just beautiful and serene. For lovers, this is the paradise!

High quality design guesthouse in Daxin/Mingshi

Reviewed By travelworld1170

Having stayed at a pretty good # of 民俗/small design guesthouses across China….I was quite happy with this place, and would recommend to others coming to the Daxin area. Yes, there are certainly more expensive options in Chongzuo/Daxin/Mingshi around here, and perhaps they have more dramatic views from their sites (this is more located on the edge of a housing cluster next to a field)…but the actual quality of this place didn’t disappoint us at all. You can tell when you walk into the lobby - sure, sometimes it seems like there is a checklist of stuff you have to buy to be a trendy guesthouse (Marshall speakers? Check. Fancy tea setup? Check. Bar with coffee and empty wine that no one actually uses? Check. Exotic brand of foreign bath soap which may or may not be real? Check. Japanese-style toilets?) but you could tell - this was really clean in its look, staff a mix of welcoming but also a bit more professional, and meticulously clean and well organized. The room didn’t disappoint either - we had booked I think a category up from the base, but they upgraded us to a nicer corner room on the fifth floor facing the Karst scenery. It had a comfortable bed and linens, a really nice balcony area with comfortable chairs to sit out at night. Dinner was pretty good - this is a bit bigger of a place, so had a fairly decent sized menu. Tofu and a local chicken dish were probably the most memorable to me. Breakfast didn’t wow me - a set offering of porridge, some friend noodles, and a standard collection of dian xin - but not bad either (no coffee offered or ordered). As for the area…Mingshi is about an hour and a half drive from Chongzuo city itself, and a still good distance from Daxin country town. Coming here probably makes the most sense as part of a self-drive trip. You are close enough to the Vietnamese border that coming here involves passing through Chinese police / border control checkpoints (they see me as a white foreigner driving, and almost get too excited - something different to record!). The scenery is very much another Karst area - let’s be honest, it didn’t strike me as quite as dramatic as Yangshuo but there is also rafting and an attempt to build up a tourism scene (just 25 years behind Yangshuo maybe?). Would highly recommend biking around the area - the hotel has bikes to offer. Can also drive ~45 minutes to an hour to the Detian / Ban Gioc waterfalls (not bad, but not Niagara/Iguaza size) and there are also a number of canyons and other natural sights in the area.

Fine for a Short Visit - Needs Food Facilities.

Reviewed By ShenyangTaff

Let me start by informing that the location in your map is way off. This hotel is located on County Road S325 in the GPS systems of China; Road X538/Janbian Highway in Google Maps. The hotel itself is fine for a short stay. The location is excellent for the entry to the waterfall park, BUT you need to travel approx 20km back along S325 (X538/Yanbian Highway toward Nanong/Fujiao on Google Maps)to obtain entry tickets. Our rooms were clean, the beds (Chinese) firm and, lo and behold, the plumbing accurate..ie the cold and hot signs on the mixer taps were correct. I have marked down the services simply because there were few to be had and our rooms were not serviced after our first night. When my daughter queried this with the front desk the reply was that we did not request the service. Similarly facilities are marked down because they consisted solely of a bedroom, albeit very roomy BUT highly expensive for a hotel with so little to offer. There were no food services, neither breakfast nor dinner, availble for our visit, and none within walking distance - unless you fancy walking a county lane in the dark. The hotel suggested a small village approx 2kms along route S325. However parking here was 20RMB no matter your length of stay. This village is also the entry point to the waterfall park where you should be able to buy tickets - but the machines would not work for our Chinese citizen and would not accept foriegner details. We eventually drove approx 8km back past the hotel to the next village along S325 (X538/Yanbian Highway toward Nanong/Fujiao on Google Maps) that had open restaurants - sorry name of village not available but the food was excellent..local river fish. Apologies but I actually forgot to photograph the locale and rooms etc. Frankly I cannot recommend this hotel unless they develop their services to provide adequate restaurant facilities.
