The hostel is part of an off the grid homestead where we grow our own food, build with local wood and stone and try to live in harmony with the landscape. Rooms include a private hut, private room for a couple or small family, small dorm, private single room. Evening campfire, communal dinner, unique compost heated shower, gardens, orchard, chickens. We also host tours and classes. Peace and quiet, stars at night, walking trails along the seashore.
We had a great 2 night stay at the Deer Isle Hostel. Annalise and Dennis are very welcoming. Their homestead is amazing with a huge garden. We joined them for dinner the two nights we were there, the first night was a hearty soup made from all their garden vegetables, homemade bread, with crazy good butter, cabbage slaw and fresh popped popcorn. The second evening dinner was a delicious vegetarian chili with rice, cheese, tortilla chips, herb creama, watermelon rubarb cobbler. Annalise is a great cook! They have an outside shower heated with composting seaweed which was really impressive. Dennis is a talented craftsman and their property has many buildings he’s built. If exploring Deer Isle is what you’re after the hostel is a great option with shoreline trials accessible from the property. Our 5 y/o enjoyed exploring the property and visiting through the fence with the chickens.

Campground with 28 RV sites (water, electric, sewer, cable) & 13 Tent sites. Complimentary WiFi. Big Rig access. Onsite store. River Outfitter with rentals of kayaks (single & tandem), canoes, standup paddleboards, & tubes. Rock Hounding in our Sluice. Find Maine gems under our canopy.
We had a group of fifteen adults and teenagers and felt everything went very smoothly from booking to the end of our trip. The river is faster than the Saco and has less places to stop at for lunch or breaks but the views and scenery were amazing. The drivers were very nice and helpful and its great that you can take your time and paddle right in to the facility whenever you are done. We will be back next year for sure!

I called a month in advance to schedule a shuttle ride for a section hike on the AT. I was quoted approx. 80$. The day before my trip Zach from the Stratton hotel calls to give me a number for Tom who was going to Pick us up. Called Tom, no response, but another person (North? I believe was his name) called instead and quoted 140$. He had another gentleman call because I told him 140$ was way too high. The ride was only 50 minutes. I appreciated the calls from the numerous people, but not the lack of planning/follow through on the Stratton Motel. Especially the day before our trip. Long story, but I ended up using Pine Ellis lodge for the shuttle. They drove farther and only charged 119$, not 140$. Don't use Stratton motel or rely on them for your trail shuttle arrangements! I can't comment on the hotel itself, but I'm not ever going to stay there now either.

The Inn on Winter’s Hill offers Victorian charm and modern comfort in the quaint small town of Kingfield, ME.
Cozy and relaxing. The staff was great and the decor is beautiful!! Definitely will go back! The owner John was super accommodating and helpful. The bar area felt like you were in your own living room.

The Black Elephant Hostel is a very vibrant and comfortable space with unique décor and super friendly staff. We pride ourselves on offering clean and affordable accommodations in a location that cannot be beat! We are one block outside of Old Port and nestled among some of the finest eateries, shopping, and entertainment in Portland. We offer dorm rooms, private rooms, a comfy lobby, awesome locally roasted coffee, and an outdoor garden. Guests also have full access to our well equipped kitchen. All dorms come equipped with lockers with keys supplied. All linens and towels are included! We are also wheelchair accessible.
I booked a private room, “The Lemur,” well in advance of my trip to Portland. It’s an en suite small room with a full size bed (which was quite comfortable), included towels, hooks for clothes, closet with a couple large shelves where I was able to dump my stuff, a couple windows, and a well placed LED reading lamp. The lamp didn’t work but upon telling the staff, they replaced it early the next day. Yay! That to me is the proof of a well run establishment. The hostel had fun décor, a great common space, friendly staff, a great set up for the shared rooms (I got to peek in), free and strong WIFI, and a GREAT PRICE. My total cost with tax for 3 nights was $408.75. Worth it! The only "negative" was not the hostel's fault. There was early morning street noise and I like to sleep with the window open. Doesn't matter. I will always stay here when in Portland. Keith

On Sugarloaf's shuttle route, a half mile through the trails from the Outdoor Center, across the street from the Narrow Gauge Pathway and the Carrabassett River, Hostel Of Maine (H.O.ME) is truly in the center of Maine's High Peaks region. We are your perfect spot for the bluebird days, wind holds, hot summer trail rides, swimming hole excursions, and more.
Think of a log cabin in the center of a mountain biking paradise. Within 1/10 of a mile, there are a plethora of mountain biking trails. I rode all day and saw only one person. It is amazing. The hostel is a beautiful log cabin. I stayed in a single room with a king size bed and a private bathroom. Restaurants are a short walk or a short drive away. I would highly recommend the Hostel of Maine.

When doing a weekend ski trip up to Sunday River, this is our go-to place when we're tired and don't feel like driving all the way back to Boston. If we call a few days ahead we're always able to secure a room, and typically stay in one of the private rooms. There's a well equipped kitchen for cooking your own meals/coffee, or just keeping snacks. Keep in mind this is a true hostel, and there aren't any private bathrooms (at least not that I've discovered) so bring a pair or flip flops for the shower. The mountain is only a 10 minute or so drive down the road!
