Google maps directed me right to the door of Dar Baaziz. You will need to walk a bit as a vehicle could not get you right to the front door. The location is in the medina but is quiet and cool and the rooms are very clean and very pleasant. All around a lovely little spot.

This is a tiny 4 room hotel in a 4 centuries old house in the medina. It has some pros and some cons. Some corners are very picturesque, like the marble courtyard or the library. They have an excellent location at daylight (at night it turns uncomfortable) , and a great cook-waiter-housekeeper (Marwa). If you bring more than a backpack or carry-on, call the office in advance to get help with the luggage, since all the medina is pedestrian. Our room was very narrow; the queen size bed has 30 or 40cm free on each side; the ornamental arch that frames the bed is an obstacle if you wake up at night, so watch your head. The curtains are thin; the first night the courtyard lights were kept on all night so it made it very hard for me to sleep. There’s no staff at night, so remember to turn them off; the switch is next to the stairs, in the upper floor The bedroom´s floor is made of cement, with a central carpet; there is another carpet stored on top of the closet, you might need it, because the floor is cold and slippery. The sink is cute but very small; you have to take turns to use the only mirror in the room, above it. It would be very easy to add another behind the sink or behind a closet door. The room has 3 electric plugs: one for the TV and one in each side of the bed, you can charge only 2 devices at the same time. The sink has no plug for the razor and there’s no hairdryer anyway. The shower and toilet share one glass door, so there’s no privacy. Even with the heating on, we were cold during the night; the next, the housekeeper turned on a small heater that was in the closet; when we arrived, the room was already warm . You can’t keep it on all night because of the huge amount of light it produces. A nice breakfast was offered in the courtyard, but the weather was cold and the waitress (Marwa, of course) offered to place us in the library, which was very nice. It became "our place" for the 3 days we stayed. Before leaving, we were invited (by Marwa, who else?) to see the other rooms, already vacant, and they were much nicer, roomy and with king size beds. There was even a family room being renovated. Choose your room carefully. Pick one downstairs or the one upstairs near the stairs.

Did not visit at period stated but no option to change year. Stayed here around forty five years ago and booked for two weeks but had to check out early as it was too near the Mosque and didn't exactly promote a good nights sleep. Clean and polite at that time and would have stayed full term but for the noise as it's ideally placed for to experience the real Tunisia.

I liked my stay in this classic blue and white arab house which has an inner yard. I felt like a king in the castle. Personally I like to learn about the local culture and history, when I'm travelling. And Dar Hkaiem is ideal for that. It was a much better experience than staying in a hotel room (which are similar all around the world). The place is situated in residential area, not very far from the beach and not far from the taxi (louage) station. I liked to closely see the everyday life of local people.

Journey to Tunisia was ok. Flights with Air France to Paris and Nouvelair (Tunisia based), ok. I had a private pickup to Hammam Sousse about 1.5 hr drive down the coast. Got to the hotel and it was shut. My driver woke the caretaker and I could check in but no staff, no heating and no food meant no thanks. The room smelt damp and unlived in. There was no place looking like the brochure and website..
