The “Vrachanski Balkan” Nature Park is the second largest of the country’s parks, which covers the Vratchanska Mountain and the massif of the Lakatnishki cliff rocks. It has a territory of 28 844 ha most of which is covered with karst limestones, 1 300 meters thick. Unique in their beauty caves and chasms can be seen in the park. Their total number is above 500 and special interest attract Ledenika, Temnata dupka (Dark hole), Zmejova dupka (Dragon hole), Haidushka propast (haidushka chasm), Gardujuva dupka, Kalnata propast (Muddy chasm), Nevestina propast (Bride’s chasm) and Sokolova dupka (Eagle hole). On the territory of the park have been registered about 950 species of high plants, of which more than 80 are rare species. From scientific and preservation point of view the most interesting species are the groups living in the caves (vertebrates and bats) and the day birds of prey. There are 214 registered species of vertebrates in the park.
This is rough and beautiful nature and geology. I did not have a lot of time to go hiking here and the weather kept me a bit from it, but this natural area is just beautiful. I was on the Vratsa/Zgorigrad-side to hike, which was already beautiful, but also the south(west)ern rim, which I travelled along by train, was stunning - between Levishte and Gara Lakatnik, along the Iskar river. This whole area deserves to be visited, and I suppose only a relatively low number of people/tourists have done so thusfar (which is good). Explore it, you won't be disappointed!

Do wear good walking shoes as it can be really slippery underground and be prepared for very low passage ways. The cave area is composed of an abundance of galleries and Karst formations including stalactite and stalagmites. Because the caves are so large I did not feel claustrophobic. The stalactite and stalagmites are very different from the crystal ones that I had seen previously elsewhere as they are hardened limestone and a darker colour. The use of lighting to highlight features was good.
