More than 18,000 artifacts and exhibits show how early settlers lived in Alabama.
I haven't been to the museum since I was very young, and every time we've came through Troy I've said to myself we needed to go and visit. So we planned a trip and visited today- all in all we spent a good three hours between the museum and walking outside (if you're visiting during the Summer, bring yourself some cold drinks!) Because the indoor museum houses such precious items, please do monitor little ones and help them admire from a safe distance without touching! When we arrived, everyone inside warmly greeted us. The kind lady at the counter (I didn't catch her name, but she was so helpful) gave us a map and explained all the different features to the indoor museum and how to navigate the exhibits. There are so many important features indoors- we were especially fond of the old logging tools and horse/oxen drawn implements. Once we made it back around to the beginning, the same nice lady allowed us into the General Store that was completely breath-taking, and it made us feel like we had stepped back in time to a real, functioning store. By sheer accident, I came across an article a few months back about the Apollo 14 "Moon Trees" and researched to find out that the Pioneer Museum had one of the few in Alabama. Make sure to pay this special tree a visit! We followed the map around the grounds and really enjoyed seeing so many cabins and beautiful buildings. We were particular fascinated by the old steam engine (not the beautiful locomotive out front, but the huge engine at the back of the grounds). My childhood memories didn't do this justice- I was so impressed seeing it again, and my appreciation of pioneer history was fueled by this visit. I recommend this museum strongly for any history buff, or student wanting to learn more about Alabama history. (We personally are building a log cabin by hand, so examining the tools inside and the different cabins/notching/furnishings was insightful. If you're looking into cabin building yourself, come pay this place a visit too!) 5 of 5 stars because this place exceeded my expectations. It is one of the few places to see a collection of cabins that we've found in the state. The staff was so helpful and polite- to have someone so knowledgeable makes it all the better. In the 50th year anniversary of the moon landing, seeing a rare "Moon Tree" was also a special treat. What a great collection in all- please make sure to stop by the Pioneer Museum, take your time, and soak in the history!
