This attraction was such a pleasant surprise -- had dozens of rides and games and no lines (roller coaster, trains, hay ride, monkey barrels, banana ride, cornfield mazes, playground, etc.). Other similar pumpkin festivals are overcrowded and expensive. This one is worth the extra drive to get to.

I was raised in Cedar Lake but haven't lived there in about 30 years. I first went to this museum two years ago and was pleasantly surprised by the size (20+ dedicated rooms with different themes), the quality of the collections and the knowledge of the docents. There is even a huge mastodon bone they found on the lake! The most recent change was an old barber shop they physically moved with all the equipment from the early days. Everyone of all ages will be sure to find something that really interests them. Its a wonderful way to spend a rainy day.

Imagine the opportunity of sitting with Jesus at the last supper table. The apostles have not yet arrived, so it's just you and Jesus. Or how about being witness to Pontius Pilate looking down on Jesus and he turns and asks you, what do you say? Do you want to set him free or do you say crucify him? That's what you get when you go to St John's Indiana to see the shrine of Christ's passion. You're actually put in these situations and it can have a profound effect on you. I hope all Christians take the time to walk the different stations.

This courthouse was first built as a log structure in 1837, only to be replaced by a frame structure in 1849. The central portion including the clock tower was began in 1878 and dedicated in 1880. The towers were added in 1907 and dedicated in 1909. Because of the courthouse, the square always looks great and helps to make the town square area a bit more vibrant. There is a small museum that is dedicated to John Dillinger and to his era when criminal gangs like his were actually lauded by people. It did take some time for law enforcement at the time to come to grips with what was happening in the 1920s and 1930s. If you are near Crown Point make the stop, though I wouldn't make a separate field trip to it. You may also want to call to verify the hours.

It’s a great beautiful piece of property where the annual Lake County Fair is held each year. During the rest of the year it is home for special events, trade and gun shows. Any day of the week you can find people just fishing, biking, walking around the lake, and walking their dogs, or just relaxing on one of the park benches. Aside from its beauty, you can find plenty of peace and quite.

In 1840 Crown Point, Indiana was established as the county seat of Lake County Indiana. Besides having a court house in the center of town, a regular jail and living quarters for the Lake County Sheriff was needed. Around 1908, a modern structure was built and within the walls were the family’s living area, warden’s residence, department offices, 150 cells, maximum security accommodations, institutional kitchen, food storage, heating and cooling systems, barber shop and a garage. Everything a growing community would need for the sheriff's office. When this jail was built, it was thought to be the best in the country and, more importantly, escape-proof. However, on March 3, 1934, a young gangster named John Dillinger proved it to be otherwise when he made his daring escape. John Dillinger was never returned to this jail, as he was shot while being apprehended in front of the Biograph Theater at Clark St. & Fullerton Ave. in Chicago, Il. on July 23, 1934. Interestingly, Lake County laws mandated that the Sheriff of Lake County live in the jail house in the living quarters that were provided. In 1958, this requirement was rescinded and the living quarters became offices. In 1974, the jail was moved to a new building and in 1987 interest in restoring the facility grew and the Old Sheriff’s House Foundation, Inc. was formed the next year. The Old Sheriff's House and Jail was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and the property was acquired in 1990 and restoration plans began. Although not as visually stunning as the nearby Lake County Courthouse in the square, the jail does represent an era in which infamous gangsters, like John Dillinger, roamed the U.S. To visit the jail, there are limited hours, so you do need to call first and check on tour availability.

Dont let the small town feel throw you off. Loads of fun, room decor is upscale, puzzles challenging. The lady running it (her name escapes me) was very friendly and it was great chatting with her. Not to mention the table in her lobby is phenomenal (she made it). If you enjoy game rooms, check it out. They take walk-ins!!!!
