Devil's Crown

We did a number of snorkeling experiences on this trip--none of them were poor! A number of people on ur boat did not go--big mistake! If the guide offers you a snorkeling experience--any one--go for it. The Islands are a great place to snorkel, but you have to be ready for a far different experience than in the West Indies--if you are familiar with that! There are no hard corals and very few soft corals of interest. There no currents that we encountered. The water is comfortable and very clear. Other than a scuba diving trip in Bonaire, we have never dive with so many fishes in the water in one location. There is a large variety of fish. The number of sharks, sea lions, rays and large turtles is impressive. Being able to get so close to them is even better! The time really flies on these snorkeling trips!

Cormorant Point

We have seen on TV the pictures of the turtles laying eggs on the beach from which she was born, but never in "real life" despite being at some locations where we should have seen them in the Caribbean. It has been something we always wanted to experience. Well, after the wet landing*, we climbed the little hill and went to the other side of the island to the beach that was filled with turtle nests and a number of turtles swimming in the bay--we saw one throwing sand. We then watched her struggle mightily to get back into the water. Our guide would not let us assist her--against the law! It took her a good 30 minutes to make the exhausting trek back to the water and we cheered her on! It was a great sight to see her swim away. A little memory that we will have forever! As for the Pink Flamingos, they are far less interesting. They are a long way aways, but there were about 50 of them. The did a little straing of the pond muck and we were quickly bored. The walk on the approach beach was a real good one. We saw a lot of bird activity and the area is beautiful. The beach is very nice and there were NO FLIES! This is really a pretty little island with a nice easy walk up the hill and down to the second beach. The landscape is great--a walk through a garden! Lots of vegetation and a lot of green as opposed to the dry environment on the other islands. This is not a good trip to skip--as did a few of our group. There is a lit to see and do that we did not get to see on other adventures. *Although they (the guide, crew, and brochures) make a "big deal" about the wet landings, there is really nothing complex or difficult about them--if you keep your wits about you. The crew has done them a million times and they know how to get you on and off safely. They do require the wearing of life vest on all small boat activities--they are awkward, but essential.

A change for something different. The walk was great and amazing story of a family who used to take shelter in the Pirate Cave. The views of the island from the top was great too.

Playa Negra

This is a lovely peaceful spot on the quietest and most peaceful of the 4 inhabited islands in the Galapagos. It’s the best stretch of beach near the village, right in front of the Wittmer Hotel, and is regularly used by tour groups who want to do a quick snorkelling session off the beach: the entry is sloping soft sand and it’s ideal (though La Loberia beach, half a mile walk to the south, has yellow sand, less beach but also has sea turtles to swim with, and stunning views). A great place to stay is the 2 bedroom Black Beach House, at the back of the beach, run by Ingrid another of the Wittmers. She also now has a small informal bar area under the trees in front of the house - great for a drink post-swim, or in the evening. Just a lovely spot altogether: we fell in love with it.
