Nova Gorica (pronounced [ˈnɔ̀ːʋa ɡɔˈɾìːtsa] ( listen); population: 13,852 (town); 21,082 (incl. suburbs); 31,000 (municipality)) is a town and a municipality in western Slovenia, on the border with Italy. Nova Gorica is a planned town, built according to the principles of modernist architecture after 1947, when the Paris Peace Treaty established a new border between Yugoslavia and Italy, leaving nearby Gorizia outside the borders of Yugoslavia and thus cutting off the Soča Valley, the Vipava Valley, the Gorizia Hills and the northwestern Karst Plateau from their traditional regional urban centre. Since 1948, Nova Gorica has replaced Gorizia as the principal urban centre of the Goriška or Gorizia region, as the northern part of the Slovenian Littoral has been traditionally called.

A must see in the Solkan valley. The whole place with the monastery, the church, the surroundings is oozing with serenity. The views over the extremely beautiful Slovenian landscape is stunning. It is a Franceskan monastery in "full working order" with active brothers. There is a restaurant, but opening times unknown to me. When we visited in July it was closed during daytime. Maybe open on Sundays. The monastery also has a museum which is open on Sundays in conjunction with the mass. From Nova Gorica it's a mere 20 min ride by car to get uphill. Bus is also available to Grgar, if you'd like to hike up the last 2-3 km. Must see if you're in the Gorizia/Nova Gorica area!

The railway station of Nova Gorica that's located right beside the famous Square Transalpina/Trg Evrope at the Slovenian-Italian border, has a new cultural information transboundary touchpoint (KIT) that represents the twin towns, Nova Gorica on the slovenian side and Gorizia on the italian side. Tourists who come from all over the world and local habitants can get information about the cultural events and sights of both towns, but also useful information about Slovenia and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The initiative is organized by the House of culture of Nova Gorica (Kulturni dom Nova Gorica) and the cultural association Zavod Area 57/15 in collaboration with the House od culture of Gorizia (Kulturni dom Gorica). GIFT SHOP Recently, in the Cultural informatin touchpoint (KIT) we opened a souvenir gift shop where you can find homemade products and crafts of the local artists and souvenirs such as magnets, postcards, T-shirts and bags with the logo of the "mosaic of new Europe",
